L.O. Tries Out For the Hornets

I am watching the sports on the local OKC news tonight (work kept me in "The City") and they have this story on people that the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets are trying out prior to the upcoming NBA draft and lo and behold they interview Larry Owens!!  Larry did a good job of explaining how he was offered a tryout since he came from a smaller school and didn't get a chance to be seen by as many people.  They cut away to shots of his highlights (including the monster dunk in the Mid-Con final during the CSU game and his alley-oop in the Memphis game) while finishing the interview.

It would be fun to see L.O. in a Hornets uniform (although I know that it would be a long shot for him to make it).  I would certainly make the trip to a few Hornets games to go see Larry play if he made the team, even if it was for a few minutes of playing time.  It's always more fun to watch a game when you that you know someone that is playing in the game.

Thanks for posting this! I just wondering today what LO was up to. Even if he doesn't end up making the Hornets he should still get a shot in the DL or a league in Europe. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the league someday.

This was an article that ran in the Tulsa World today and I thought I would post it for those of you that aren't in the Tulsa area since it probably wouldn't make the press in your area.

Ex-Eagle turns heads

By JEFF LATZKE Associated Press

Larry Owens has made at least one good impression in his bid to make the NBA.

EDMOND -- Judging by a workout Thursday, New Orleans Hornets coach Byron Scott couldn't understand why Larry Owens didn't attend the NBA's pre-draft camp in Orlando last week. So he asked.

"I didn't get invited," Owens responded.

A 6-foot-7 guard known for defense, Owens was overlooked on an Oral Roberts Golden Eagle team that featured two-time Mid-Continent Conference player of the year Caleb Green. But Owens turned at least one head in his first chance to try out for an NBA team.

"Larry's a guy I really didn't pay a whole lot of attention to," Scott said. "I was surprised that he wasn't in Orlando. I thought he was a pretty good basketball player out here. He shot the ball well, moved extremely well, didn't mind banging against the bigger guys, wanted to guard them as well."

Owens isn't among 134 players listed in a media guide of draft prospects put together by the NBA and he hasn't received any hype as a potential pick in the two-round NBA draft June 28. Only 60 players will get drafted, but others will get a chance to earn a spots through free agency.

Owens has been working this summer to improve the offensive side of his game to go with defensive skills that earned him recognition as the Mid-Con's defensive player of the year last season. Still, he knows his best chance to make an NBA team would likely be as a defensive specialist.

"I think that's what most teams are looking for as far as smaller guards -- somebody that can play defense," Owens said. "I'm not big, so I can't pound it. But if somebody wants a smaller guard to play defense, I was the defensive player of the year so I think that works to my advantage."

If nothing else, Owens said the workout was a chance to get pointers on how to improve his game. In the process, he hopes he caught someone's eye and will get another chance.

Larry Owens

(on getting to work out for the Hornets)

?I?m just thankful for the opportunity to come here and try out and show my talent. It feels good to play against some of the top (draft prospects). I can learn from them and find out what I need to do differently. It?s a blessing and honor to be here. Not everyone gets the opportunity to do this. At first I was nervous, but after I got the ball in my hands I calmed down and just played.?

(on his basketball future)

?I just want to go to as many workouts as I can and get my name out there. I hope teams can see my aggressiveness and that will turn into being a late second-round pick, or (an) overseas (career).?

not sure if someone has already posted this, but it looks like the hornets gave larry a second look...

Oral Roberts' Larry Owens worked out in Oklahoma City for the second time. A forward, he is a possible second-round pick, although his name has yet to appear on any prominent mock draft. It is possible he could be invited to play on a team in the Vegas Summer League.
