The Pioneers coming off a big comeback victory vs. St. Thomas at home....still they are 5-10 and not a very good team....ORU is 7-6 and needs to hold serve and win these next two home games against Summit bottom feeders Denver and Omaha.  Let's hope the holidays haven't tired out the Good Guys and we come back strong and fresh for 2022......Go Blue!!...:tb-blue:

Looks like the game is a go, since the ORU website has a story about it.  Denver is in rebuild mode this season: new coach and mostly new players.  ORU usually shoots the three very well at home, so it should be a double digit victory on Thursday night!

TheEagleman agrees that unless we have a Holiday Hangover.....ORU should win this by double digits.... expecting the Golden Eagles to be an opening line favorite of 8-10 points and Good Guys should cover.....more to come once the line comes out later tonight or tomorrow.....Go Blue!!  :shield-logo:   Beat :Denver:

ESPN (via Caesar's Sportsbook) has ORU as an early 14.5 point favorite, and their matchup predictor (based on the ESPN Basketball Power Index) gives the good guys a 96% chance of winning.  https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/game/_/gameId/401365644

Also, apparently guard KJ Hunt leads Denver in points (16.8), assists (3.5) AND rebounds (4.8) per game.

Over/under of 143, so (roughly) predicts a 79-64 final.  I’d be surprised if ORU doesn’t score at least 80, unless the Pioneers take the air out of the ball.

I agree, -14.5 seems pretty generous. I never doubt Vegas' wisdom anymore though.

78-63 ORU

I predict a 20 point win tonight.  ORU will be excited to be at home and will be hot on shooting.  Big night for Midcourt Max!

TheEagleman expects another sloppy first half....that seems to be what happens lately......then ORU wakes up and pulls away in the 2nd half.....hard to believe Good Guys won't score 80+ against the Pioneers....hopefully our guys are juiced to play and finish 2021 on a high note....we need to win both this week but one at a time........TheEagleman will tease ORU and Over.......ORU 87  Denver 69.....GO BLUE!!! :tb-white:

ORU has only played one home game in the last month (UTA).  Will be good to see them on the ORU Sports Network again.  Probaly will be a small crowd tonignt with the holidays and the students being at home.  Weaver has been quiet the last couple of games, so it would be nice to see him have a big game tonight!

Covering the game spread at halftime is a pretty good start. Need to keep up the defense - Denver looks pretty lost on offense.

Talk about a game of runs: ORU leads by 19 then Denver ties the score and the Golden Eagles finish on a 17 point run.  At times they looked good and at other times the Eagles really struggled.  Maybe due to the time off and holiday season.  Carlos picking up his third foul right before halftime, kept him on the bench most of the second half and I thought that hurt ORU's defense in the second half.

A little too close for comfort but ORU gets the big home victory in the end 83-66...thanks to 24 from Max and a couple key 3 point shots from Phipps. Weaver chips in 15. Bring on Omaha....😎

Good win tonight. Midcourt Max stepped up at the end to seal the deal like the superstar he is!  Weaver and Phipps hit some key 3's and Kareem had some big rebounds.

For the most part, the bench was good as ORU outscored Denver 31-5 in bench points.  We will take that morning, noon, and night (every game).   DJ was on target as he had 15 points and 4 rebounds.  Weaver is averanging over 13 points at home and around 8 on the road.  He needs to be that number 2 guy in 2022 for the Eagles.  Good win to end the year and Happy New Year 2022 everybody!

As Oral Roberts often said, may you prosper and be in good health even as your soul prospers (3 John 2) in 2022!

I was able to attend the game with OKCEagle and ORUalum86 - it was great to be back in the newly renovated Mabee Center and watch the team in person! Seemed that the game was well in hand at halftime, but as mentioned above, Denver tied it up before the good guys ran away with it. Max is quick!

Felt good to be yelling at the refs again...🤣 💪

Yes! I love it when the entire arena let's the refs have it. I make sure they hear me! 😂

Max looked winded tonight. I'm assuming he may have gotten some extra time off to nurse whatever injury has bothered him. After last nights game his lungs and legs should be ready to roll by Saturday for sure.

DJ really struggled in the first half but came out strong in the second. His defensive intensity helped us regain a sizeable lead after Denver's run.

I like how coach was using Francis in the pick and pop role early in the first half. If he keeps shooting with confidence, both he and DJ will put a lot of stress on the defense.

It's always good when you win at home!

See you all on Saturday.

Impressive that ORU held leading scorer KJ Hunt to 8 points...less than half his average....we need more D like that in 2022 to win the Summit League....🏀👍🏀

Both of those "charge" calls were pretty bad. Especially the flop warning that was overruled by the out of position ref 🙄.

Those were good seats @vcboy2000! I'm sure the opposing team could hear you pretty well 😆!

That was such a weird sequence. Obviously a terrible call by the out of position ref, but I don't think that you can stop play to call a flop warning. I think the guy who made the "flop" motion realized that after he made the motion and couldn't go overrule the guy that was standing at half-court.

Did anyone see Max get a tech? Was I not paying attention?

Max got into it with his "shadow" for the night.

Here's the book so far this season on guarding Max:

  1. Assign the most physical guard that you have (regardless of size) that you think can stay up with Max.
  2. Shadow him relentlessly from one end of the floor to the other, on every possession.
  3. Get as physical as possible in every way:  reaching, grabbing, fighting through screens, hip-checking, knocking him down on every drive, etc.
  4. Double-team him off every high screen, taking your chances with the screener being left wide open.

In short, Max is getting beat to death every game, and he's getting sick of it.

I totally understand the tactics that teams are using against Max. The issue I have is that the refs seem to think that anything goes. I am surprised that he doesn’t get better treatment from the officials - given that he is an all American player and we are playing at home.

He needs to do two things a LOT more:

  • Initiate contact and then sell the foul, ala James Hardin.  I'm not talking about flopping, but at least be a little more demonstrative.  He could take some lessons from Phipps in that regard; that dude is a straight-up salesman.
  • More back-door cuts and sideline-to-sideline runs along the baseline, ala Steph Curry.  Sometimes, you just have to run away from all the attention, and get that shadow tangled up in the traffic.

Speaking of backdoor cuts:  Denver burned ORU with those the entire second half.  No backside help at all.  St. Thomas will backdoor us to death with their Princeton-style offense; need to get that shored up before heading to Minneapolis next week.
