Don't look now, but perennial Summit/MidCon doormat Western Illinois is off to an 8-2 start, with a stunning opening-night win at Nebraska, home victories over Ball State and Miami (Ohio), and road wins at Northern Kentucky and by 27 points today at Central Michigan.  Their only losses so far are by four points respectively at DePaul and Eastern Michigan.  They're led by super-senior Will Carius at 17 points per game, but they have three other players averaging more than 13 points per contest.

With their first four Summit League games at Denver, Omaha, and St. Thomas before hosting UMKC, the Leathernecks could very well be 4-0 in league play when ORU visits Macomb on January 8th.  What a difference a year makes:  Western was 7-15 last season with only two non-conference wins.

Wow. The last time Western finished outside of the bottom 3 in the league was the 12-13 when they finished second in the regular season. A pretty impressive run of being really bad. It'd be cool if they're actually good this year.

WIU was playing strong last year when they came to the Mabee Center. They had won five in a row and had ORU down ten in the second half before the Eagles pulled out the win in the last minute.  Their coach is really solid, and he has won 20 games before with another mid major.  WIU brought back a core group from last year, along with some talented transfers.  Guess we can add them to the mix (SDSU, NDSU and ORU) that could be dancing in March!

The Summit League looks to be better this year with several surprise teams (Western Illinois, UMKC  and St. Thomas). I think this could be the league’s best/strongest collection of teams.

WIU is attempting 27.9 three pointers (ranked 33rd) and making 11.1 shots per game (14th) - shooting 39.8% (19th). This is not the normal Leatherneck basketball team.

St. Thomas is attempting 33.7 three pointers (3rd) and making 11.4 shots per game (1st) - shooting 39.9% (16th).

Amazingly, ORU’s 3 point shooting stats mirror the Tommies exactly in attempts, makes and shooting percentage.

SDSU is 8-2 on the season. They attempt 25.9 three pointers pg (65th) and make 11.7 shots pg (10th) - shooting 45.2% (1st)

This is definitely a shooters league!
