Keenan Henderson Posted April 11, 2021 Author Share Posted April 11, 2021 Thought the turning point for ORU was Game 1 vs Western Illinois. They came in 11-10 and 8-5 in conference play, which was for the most part just an average season. WIU hit 16 three's and was up 10 with 7 minutes to go. It did not look good for the Eagles but Max caught fire and they came back and won 85-81. After that they blew out WIU in the second game and as they say the rest is history. Today I watched the highlights (10 minute clips) of the three NCAA tournament games. So far thousands have watched these including: 1.1 million views for OSU, about 300,000 for Florida, and 150 thousand for the Arkansas game. He went from 21 points a game to 29 after losing Glasper. Just give it to Max for 40 minutes and watch ORU roll. He was good before but Mid Court Max became a whole new player! That event happens so many times when someone is injured and another is given a chance, like Lou Gehrig, Tom Brady, etc. who became great! Keenan Henderson Posted April 13, 2021 Author Share Posted April 13, 2021 Also the unlikely European heroes: Jurgens and Lacis. Both had been around for close to three years but for the most part had been in the background. When there time came to shine they really stepped up. Jurgens with his timely defense and drives to the basket and Lacis with a blocked shot that saved the season. They both came in as shooters/scorer types but developed an all around game. Maybe the question is now how do they build on this past miracle season? Most of the mid majors who made a run in the NCAA tournament in say the last 15 years have gone back to being a middle to average type team, except Gonzaga and Wichita State. That's easy: those other schools very quickly lost their coaches to bigger programs; Wichita and Gonzaga stepped up in the money department and retained their guys who got them there. Then ORU comes in and knocks off a top ten team in Ohio State and a solid Florida team. Hopefully that is the beginning of some more quality wins in the upcoming non-conference schedules. It really helps to have played those top ten teams on a neutral floor. Go back and look at the better non-conference wins for ORU in the past 20 years or so, and a lot of them came in tournaments, or occasionally at the Mabee Center itself. One thing in Paul Mills favor now, however, is that after beating a couple of big boys, he has earned the right to get on officials on the road, which will help. After his coming-out party in Indianapolis, officials can no longer use that classic old retort that Larry Bird would sneer at guys who tried to get in his head: ”I don’t even know who you are.” 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TrueBlue82 Posted May 3, 2021 Share Posted May 3, 2021 The COVID tourney also helped ORU in that not only did they play major teams on a neutral court, but with very few fans in attendance. Usually, a first round game in a 15,000 seat arena would see ORU fans outnumbered by 20-1. But in Indy, the fan count was much closer. In fact, ORU’s fan base was larger (and louder) than Florida’s, and even the Sweet Sixteen Arkansas game was no larger than a 3-1 ratio in favor of the Hogs.
