Mid-Con Schedules Released

I don't like this schedule at all. We start with two games at home - during Christmas break, when no students are in town - and then end with a wicked five game stretch, including two difficult opponents at home (IUPUI/Valpo) and a three game roadie which includes the dreaded SUU/CSU trek that doomed the Jaguars at the end of this season. We need to have a comfortable Mid-Con lead going into the last three weeks!

I wonder if there's any way we can get out of the CSU road game - if there's EVER been a "trap" game - this is it!

Oh well - bring it on!

Jan 11 - @ IUPUI

Jan 13 - @ Valpo

Jan 18 - SUU

Not sure if this is true, so take it with a grain of salt. However, I heard that since CSU won't be in the mid-con, they will play at our (mid-con) respective home games and count as non-conference, but if we want to go there it's up to us.

Not sure how much validity there is to that, but I heard it over on the Valpo board.

A few observations:

? Mark your calendars and gas up the SUV for a "roadie" to UMKC on Saturday, February 3. Hopefully the game will be at historic Municipal Auditorium downtown and not at cavernous Kemper Arena, or even worse, the cattle arena next to Kemper that UMKC played in a few years back (no joke - it really IS a cattle arena...)

? If you want to "Super Size" that road trip, drive up to Western Illinois on Thursday, February 1, for that game (nine hours), cut over to Kansas City through the Missouri River wine country on Friday (tastings optional), hit the casinos and BBQ joints in Kansas City on Saturday before the game, and make the wife happy with a little shopping at The Plaza on Sunday before heading home. Two ORU road basketball games, wine tasting, blackjack, and BBQ ribs - now THAT'S what I'm talking about!!

? With any luck at all, we could be 7-1 heading into that WIU/UMKC road swing. The only loss? At IUPUI on January 11 (they're still REALLY good). But the only other two road games in our first eight contests is at Valpo (rebuilding year) and Centenary (just not very good). Hold the fort at home, and we should be looking pretty good heading into a forbidding February.

? The Valpo game at home on February 17 is in fact a SATURDAY night game, following IUPUI on Thursday, February 15. The kicker is having to board a plane the next morning, February 18, to Las Vegas, then busing 3 hours to Cedar City to play Southern Utah at altitude Monday night, February 19. Does ANYONE at the conference office think about these things? And do you get the feeling the conference office is trying to do EVERYTHING in their power to help Valpo get over their "0-for-life" snide in Tulsa? Talk about a trap game for the Golden Eagles - sandwiched between conference-favorite IUPUI 48 hours earlier, and the Southern Utah trip the next morning. Nice work, Homer!!

? With all that on our plate, we should do EVERYTHING possible to get out of the game at Chicago State scheduled for that Wednesday, February 21. Because that coming Saturday, February 24, we have to play the ESPN Bracket Buster game at Lord-know's-where, followed in 48 hours by a game at Oakland on Monday, February 26. Geez, what a stretch!! Six games in 11 days, with four of them on the road!! The Mid-Con tourney may seem like a walk in the park in comparison!

? Come to think of it, why would ANYONE play at Chicago State this next season if you didn't have to? Lousy facilities, rowdy crowd (with an attack band!), and a dangerously talented team. Coupled with the traditional trip to traveling partner Southern Utah, this is a no-brainer for all Mid-Con schools - GET OUT OF THE GAME!! And if every conference school bolts, how is CSU going to find eight non-conference games in January and February? THEY COULDN'T GET A SINGLE HOME GAME IN NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER LAST YEAR!! They may seriously not be able to compile a schedule next year - or ever. As my ol' buddy Ross Perot said: "That loud, sucking sound you hear is CSU basketball going down the drain as a D-1 program!"

? The Mid-Con tourney in Tulsa starts Saturday, March 3. That's just SEVEN DAYS after our Bracket Buster game, which could be in Hawaii for all we know. So why do we have to play that Monday, February 26, ON THE ROAD at Oakland? Is that fair? Are these Bracket Buster games REALLY worth the hassle? Wait - any chance we could have a Bracket Buster HOME game for a change? That would make all the difference in the world...

? Wait a minute - I'm assuming the Bracket Buster game is February 24 just because that's when we happen to have a bye. But Valpo (BB participant last season) and IUPUI (only other Bracket Buster candidate from the Mid-Con) are playing EACH OTHER on the 24th, and the Bracket Buster game last season was actually on the 18th of February, a week earlier in the schedule. What if the Bracket Buster games this season are all on the 17th of February? That's the same night we're currently scheduled to host Valpo! So if the Bracket Buster games are on the 17th, our schedule needs revision. And if it's on the 24th, Valpo and IUPUI must not either one be in it, or they need to have their game moved to another date...

I thought Senior Night was the last home game of the year, which in this case would be SATURDAY, February 17th vs. VALPO. Hmmmm I smell a classic T-Shirt idea coming from this matchup..........

"ORU Basketball Season Tickets..... $45

Game Night Program and Pre-Game Festivities.....$5

Popcorn, Hotdog, and Soda with my sons.....$15.00

Watching Ken Tutt and Caleb Green beat VALPO at the Mabee Center on Senior Night.............PRICELESS.

There are some things Valpo can't buy (beating ORU in Tulsa). For everything else there's my ORU Alumni Card. "

Senior Nights are usually your LAST HOME GAME of the season, regardless of what night of the week it is, but you're right - I was thinking Oakland on Monday, February 26 was a home game, and it's not - it's another road game in February!

Speaking of road trips, I think we should get a caravan of fans together to do the UMKC trip this year. It's close enough for a lot of fans to feel comfortable enough to drive and it's on a saturday. Mabey we could start a "ROAD WARRIORS" crew that puts together a package for 1 or 2 away games a year that make it easy for fans to go to. If we can start small with getting folks to travel a little here and there, in time we could turn into a really good traveling fan base.

Let's see the past two years our last two games have been on the road with UMKC and ORU....Oh, I get it...Eaglebackr thinks Homer has such clout with the schedule makers that that was fair....silly me....

...all kidding aside, I really do wonder why the past several years, ORU has played AT Valpo in January, with the return game in Tulsa in late February. Why does that never flip? With both of them perennial contenders, it's kind of odd to play that February game in Tulsa just 7-10 days before possibly meeting again in the Mid-Con tourney semis or finals. As long as the tourney is in Tulsa, it would seem to be more fair (especially for Valpo) to play the January game in Tulsa and the February game at Valpo. Maybe YOU guys could have a Senior Night against US for a change...

We've had the same question, but whoever makes out the Mid-Con schedule apparently has this figured out. It's not as bad as our women having to play in Southern Utah, the home, then at Centennary in a 5 days span.

The excuse two years ago when the schedule was adjusted was we had to for television, but that doesn't seem the case anylonger. I wonder if the travel complaints would lessen if the scheduled travel was more equitable?

Who knows? You just plays 'em as you sees 'em.....

In either 2003 or 2004 it WAS the reverse. We played you guys in January at the Mabee Center, you came to the ARC in February. But that was the only time I can recall.

Didn't I see a story about the prospective schedule for next year? I know we are working on a tournament in Tulsa and are trying to get the fourth team lined up. Montana will be coming in to fulfill their bracketbuster obligation. We will be playing at Tulsa and Arkansas. Wonder if we will be playing Utah State again? I assume that we will be part of the ESPN bracketbuster games again - though it is a bit questionable how beneficial that is unless we are televised.

Would be nice to add a Texas team, preferably from Dallas, as well as some more regional schools (Wichita State and/or Missouri State) to build natural rivalries. Maybe since OSU is now playing TU, we can get Sean to schedule his brother....

I've always loved having Valpo as our last home game of the season - I never really thought about that not being as desirable for Valpo as it was for us!

Guess to be fair we should switch back and forth from one year to the next - but I STILL like having Valpo at home for our last home game, all fairness aside.
