MILFORD, Conn. -- Oral Roberts University men's basketball player Mickey Michalec was drafted by the Oklahoma Storm in the fourth round of 2006 United States Basketball League (USBL) draft, conducted on Tuesday evening, April 11. The Enid-based franchise starts the 2006 season on Friday, April 28th.

Michalec, a 6-11 center from Skiatook, Okla., just finished a two-year playing career for the Golden Eagles in which he averaged 6.9 points and 5.1 rebounds in 66 games. After playing his first two years at Texas Tech, Michalec transferred to ORU and was apart of a senior class that helped lead the Golden Eagles to their first NCAA Tournament appearances in 22 years.

Michalec was one of four local players drafted by the Storm, as they also selected Oklahoma City's Lorenzo Gordan, Oklahoma State's Aaron Pettway, and Oklahoma's Taj Gray.

The Northeast Pennsylvania Breakers made Syracuse guard Gary McNamara the first overall selection in the league's 21st annual college draft.

Complete draft coverage can be found at www.usbl.com/ssp/06draft.

The eight-team USBL begins play for the 2006 season on Friday, April 21, with the Storm's opener taking place a week later when they host the Nebraska Cranes at Enid's Mark Price Arena at 7:05 p.m.

From the USBL website:

"The USBL season runs from Late-April (to allow players who have concluded their collegiate careers and either have been drafted by the USBL or want to attend mini-camp) until late June (before the start of NBA rookie and free agent camps). For draft-hopeful collegians, the USBL is the premiere summer league, which offers a sound transition from the college to the professional game. The USBL?s playing rules are identical to the NBA?s rules, with the added stipulation that each team carries at least two rookies on its ten-player roster. This provides a maximum opportunity for players looking to showcase their skills as well as stay in prime physical and mental condition prior to the NBA Draft."

So this is bizzare...

I talked to Mickey today and congratulated him on getting drafted. He said it was weird because their first game is Friday and they still haven't given him a call or anything! He found out that he got drafted because one of the coaches read it in the paper and called him.
