NCAA Tournament

Coach K and the ACC are coming up with a plan that all 346 teams would be admitted into the NCAA tournament for this next season.  What are your thoughts?  As an ORU fan I think it would great for mid major schools, such as the Golden Eagles.  It would be interesting to see who they would draw in the first round, most likely a winnable game.

It waters down the importance of the regular season and the conference tournaments to invite every team.  If they want to expand the NCAA tournament members, then give auto bids to both the conference regular season champion and the winner of each conference tournament.

There are 32 conferences right now, so up to 64 teams could theoretically receive those bids, but some of those teams would also win their conference tournaments, so the real number of auto bids would usually be in the 50s.

Then you increase the total number of teams to 80, 88, or even 96 if you want.  If you increase it to 80, then the bottom 32 teams play in the first round for a chance at the last 16 spots in round of 64.

Because the Power 5 conferences will want a lot of at large bids, you could make the field 88 teams.  There would still be a guaranteed 24 at large bids (30+ in most years), and the bottom 48 teams would play each other for the last 24 spots, and the top 40 teams would have a first round bye.

I know this is an unrealistic idea because it allows more teams from non power 5 conferences into the tournament, but it would reward the teams that played the best during their conference season, reward the teams that played the best at the end of the season (conference tournament), and reward the teams with the best overall resumes for the entire season (at large bids).

Too bad they nixed the idea.  With the Covid 19 going on and the season maybe only consisting of league games, it would have been interesting to try this idea out for just one year.

Much more likely that the NCAA puts on a stream-lined, 32-team tournament in a bubble somewhere. There will be few if any mid-to-low majors in the bracket; simply a made-for-TV event with only the major conferences involved.

Unfortunately, this is probably what will end up occurring. I highly doubt the NCAA will forgo another Tournament and this would be the way to ensure it happens... Plus it accomplishes what the Jay Bilases of the world have been clamoring for for the last decade (squeezing non-P5 schools out).
