Ranking the Summit League

Old Titan

The preseason favorite Bison (and preseason POY Vinnie Shahid) appear to be rounding into form following a shaky start.  Very impressive to go on the road and hold ANY opponent to 62 points.

DEFENSE.

WINS.

CHAMPIONSHIPS.

They miss a lot but are able to rebound those misses and get some second chance points.

"Upon further review..."

Credit where credit is due:  even if you remove the three non-D1 games from the equation (where ORU has averaged a whopping 21.3 offensive rebounds per game), ORU is still averaging 13.5 offensive rebounds per game vs. D1 competition (good enough for 23rd nationally), with all but one of those six games on the road, where it's harder to avoid fouls on the boards.

P.S.  I can not recall an ORU player who was ever built like Elijah Lufile.  I mean, just LOOK at that picture!  The man is a physical specimen. The player from Haskell has a look like, "No way I'm guarding that." LOL

Omaha really seems to have problems with teams that have length and size. Arizona has a lot of that including a 6'11 freshman who will probably be a lottery pick in 2020. ORU has beaten the Mavericks four straight times because of their inside presence (Owens, White, Eman, and K.O). Wait until they face Lufile!

Man, watching NDSU literally go blow-for-blow in the first half with 8-2 Marquette tonight in Milwaukee, and folks, lemme tell ya, the Bison are tough as nails and play really well together.

I haven’t seen South Dakota yet, but unless they’re something special themselves, I still like NDSU as the favorite in the league race. They simply look the part of a championship team.

Surprise, surprise! South Dakota loses by 19 to Northern Colorado and stat line says they shot 0% from the three point line and Northern Colorado hit 10 threes. Not sure what happened but they obviously had a really off night. It happens to good teams.

Hats off to the Bison for playing Marquette tough for 25 minutes last night... unfortunately the game lasts 40 minutes....NDSU lost 82-68 and Marquette covered the 12.5 point spread. 😉

I'd say about 32 minutes, but you're right. Tough to win against a better opponent when your bench is two players(injury/illness). The Bison are finally turning into the team most expected them to be before the season started. The Bison team that started the season would have ended up 3rd-5th in the Summit.

NDSU is good....should be a tough battle with them in January....ORU beats Missouri State with 7 guys....hope we both get healthy.😁

North Dakota beat Nebraska on the road 75-74 today. They hit 11 threes, which helped with the upset. Another nice win for the Summit League.

With the win over Mo State, the Golden Eagles jumped all the way to 111 in the NET rankings, while USD fell to 116 with the home loss to Northern Colorado (and will certainly fall further with today's loss at home to future Summit member UMKC).  The Summit is WIDE open...

Summit League starts play Sunday with three Dakota teams on the road. It looks like we will find out early how balanced the league is or does it once again go through the Dakota teams.

Hope all the teams are on the way. We're about to get smacked hard by a winter storm.

"BRING ON THE JAYHAWKS!!"

ORU starting to get a little run nationally, most likely due to their glossy NET ranking from the NCAA:

#111        Oral Roberts

#150        North Dakota State

#177        Omaha

#182        South Dakota

#187        South Dakota State

#221        North Dakota

#268        Fort Wayne

#270        Western Illinois

#314        Denver

Amazing to see that ORU is currently ranked just above such teams as Georgia Tech (112), Clemson (117), Tulsa (118), South Carolina (121), and Vanderbilt (122).

Despite going 3-6 so far vs. D1 teams, with those three wins all over sub-.500 teams, it appears ORU's strength of schedule is what's boosting their rating.  Just look at these numbers for the teams that have beaten the Golden Eagles:  Wichita State (10), Creighton (24), Iowa (26), Oklahoma State (34), BYU (37), and Tulsa (118).

What's missing from ORU's resumé?  A loss to any team with a ranking worse than #118.  Also, no home or neutral-site losses to anyone, regardless of ranking.

Whether it was by design, or just dumb luck, ORU seems to have stumbled onto something regarding scheduling and the NET:  losing to good teams on the road is fine; just avoid "bad" losses to teams with lower NET ratings, and/or losses to anyone at home.

Wonder if it will result in similar non-conference scheduling in the future:  play tough teams on the road while avoiding neutral-site tournaments where losses to other mid-and-low majors lurk, then pile up wins over absolute cupcakes at home, and the math takes care of itself.

ORU now sits at 109 in the NET rankings, and has the “distinction” of being the highest ranked team in the country with a losing record against D-1 opponents.
