Ricky Baskin (1958-2019)

Old Titan

Recommended Posts

Sad to learn this morning from his teammate Steve Bontrager that former ORU Titan Ricky Baskin has passed away from cancer at the age of 60.

Ricky was a starter on arguably the greatest ORU basketball team of all time:  Ken Hayes' 1979-80 team had wins over Kansas, Georgetown, Marquette, Princeton, and twice vs. Tulsa.  The line-up reads like a who's who of former ORU stars, including Ricky and Steve, future NBA-vet Calvin Garrett, Antonio Martin, Robert Griffin, and Cat Johnson.

This team doesn't often get the credit it deserves, for a couple of reasons:

1.  Their brutal non-conference schedule both home and away resulted in only a modest 18-10 record.  Their lone home loss that season was a 1-point thriller vs. nationally-ranked Brigham Young, which featured Danny Ainge.

2.  Despite winning the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now the Horizon League) tournament in Chicago, the Titans were banned from NCAA postseason play due to violations during previous coach Lake Kelly's tenure.

Ricky was a tough, lunch-bucket wing player with a variety of skills, and was a vital cog on that team.  Here's a link to his obit:
