Gritty win for the ladies 76-73 over the Leathernecks at the Mabee.

It was a back-and-forth game, lots of ties and lead changes and runs on both sides.  We trailed 33-27 at the half but came out in the second and fought and fought, tying it about five minutes in and then taking the lead and extending it before the Leathernecks tied it again with 10:34 to go.  Western went ahead by a basket four times over the next two-plus minutes but we answered with a basket of our own every time and took the lead for good at 60-59 on a jumper by Jordan Gilbert with 7:22 remaining in the game.  Over the next 5-6 minutes we stretched our lead to as many as seven but Western kept battling and then started pressing and fouling when we'd get it over half court.  We made just enough of our free throws in the final minute or so to hold them off, despite Vicky McIntyre fouling out with 1:37 left and Jordan Doyle, our freshman point guard, playing with four fouls for the final 6:37.

Huge games from the Balla sisters.  Dorka with a team-high 19 points, including 3-5 from three and 6-6 from the line, and with Vicky in foul trouble, Detti came off the bench and chipped in with 7 points and 7 rebounds in 13 minutes.

Doyle had 12 points (3-3 on threes) and Jordan Gilbert with her best game against a D-1 opponent with 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench.

Our young ones really led us in this game.  Dorka (sophomore) leading us in scoring, Doyle (freshman) with her scoring and ball-handling (only 3 turnovers in 30 minutes), Gilbert (freshman) key off the bench and Faith Ihim (freshman) starting and adding 6 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals in 22 minutes.  She also took and won the opening tip instead of Vicky for the third straight game.

We're now even up at 3-3 in the Summit, 9-10 overall and 8-1 at the Mabee.  We've won the first two of this three-game home stand and will try to sweep it when we host Omaha on the 24th.  I almost wish we didn't have a week off, sometimes it's hard to keep momentum going when you have that much time off.  Guess it's good to rest, get some good practice time in and have some extra time to prepare for the next victory.

Way to go, Eagles!!

Alum, you've said it more than once, when they value the ball and don't turn it over they put themselves in a position to be successful.

Eagleman, I'd like to kick something when I think about the only loss for the teams at home, a loss by the ladies to Grand Canyon back in December.  We were up by seven in that game with just over three minutes left but were outscored 11-1 the rest of the way and lost 54-51.  Anyway, what's done is done so onward and upward.

Go Eagles!
