None of this would even be up for discussion to begin with if conferences followed the lead of the Ivy and didn't have postseason basketball tournaments.  Give the automatic bid to the regular-season champion.  A team that goes through an entire conference schedule and finishes first has proven they are the best, and a conference should always send its best to the NCAAs.  What is the point in having postseason basketball tournaments?  Fan interest?  To give other teams a chance?  Sure, let's enable the teams that didn't finish in first, give them hope, give them a chance.  That's all they need, one chance to play against a team that could have their top player out, or could play terribly for one game and have their season end based on one.

Why have them then?  Money.

BTW, I love money, but not enough to sacrifice what is right for it.
