thanks for your continued prayer on Rhonda's behalf.....TheEagleman had long conversations with doctors last night from infectious disease dept and they assured me that all her tests have come back negative...her brain is good...her heart is good...no cancer and no serious diseases.....she is not in any kind of life threatening situation....they clarified that they believe her illness was brought on by some kind of stresser....this happens more than one would think....she isn't nuts and she isn't making it up...she has a lot of pain and discomfort that is causing disorientation.....we can treat those symptoms...although it may take a while to get to whatever stresser in her life has set this off....we have excellent connections at Calvary Chapel to get my wife any counseling help that she will need....I believe my wife has had eating issues for a long time....it's about control...she eats healthy but she doesn't eat enough....maybe the toll of this for the past 25-30 years has caused her body to react....I believe that could be some of this....she's not real happy with this diagnosis but she is also in denial....her whole family agrees with me on it......so the good news is that she isn't going to die...the tests are good...but we still have a lot of work to do.....we will still consult with an ENT specialist to figure out why she has this fluid in her inner ears and sinuses causing her disorientation....but again, thank you for your love and concern....TheEagleman loves you all!!!......

Interesting. I was discussing this with my wife last night and gave her a very brief overview of your wife's medical (physical) condition. Her first question was: "what kind of stress is she under?" I never mentioned anything except her physical condition.

We are praying for your wife, you and the doctors.

  • 1 year later...

It's been over a year since I posted this one and asked for prayer on behalf of my wife, Rhonda....thought it was about time for an update....in April of 2015 we left the U of Pennsylvania Hospital with a diagnosis that my wife's illness was psychological in nature....I never agreed with it at the time but when a top neurologist at Penn tells you this it's hard to argue with them....well it turned out to be a pile of crap.....lol....we wound up in December 2015 at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD (after waiting 7 months for an appt) and met the most wonderful neurologist ever...Dr. Ayun Venkatasen....this guy is a genius.....he is actually a Neuroimmunolgist and specializes in exactly what my wife has been diagnosed with...autoimmune encephalitis.....a nasty brain infection made worse by auto immune disease....he brought Rhonda down to Johns Hopkins for a week in January of this year and put her through all kinds of testing and gave her immune globulin treatments for her illness....Dr. V's team of doctors was truly amazing!!!...Johns Hopkins is a serious place dedicated to finding the cause of health issues and solving them....unlike U of Penn which I will refrain from commenting on further since possible litigation may be happening in the future. Anyway, in the past 4-5 months Rhonda has made tremendous improvement....she still has a long way to go but her weight is back to normal, she is stronger and no more wheelchair...we visited Dr. V about 3 weeks ago and he was very pleased with Rhonda's progress....she still has sensory perception issues, balance issue, sensitive hearing and some eye problems....the doctor feels this could be related to the ear infection that started this whole thing and there is a nerve in the inner ear which if damaged can cause all of the problems she has....so, on June 3 our next visit to Baltimore we are going to see a top Ear/Nose/Throat Specialist at Johns Hopkins for his opinion...so pray for that.....a year ago I thought that we might lose her but today she is so much improved....she is still disabled and cannot drive or go out on her own....but I still believe a full healing is in the future...we wait on the Lord's timing but we are now with the right doctors....God Bless Johns Hopkins and Dr. V!!!.....:D

Glad to hear that she is improving!  Waiting is hard, but it sounds like you are on the right path now.

Amazing that the Penn Doctors never put her auto immune issues together with the brain damage...her brain wasn't healing properly due to the auto immune....granted the condition she has is rare and we found no doctor in the Philadelphia area who specialized in it....one general neurologist at Jefferson Hospital finally connected the two issues but the treatment she prescribed was declined by our health insurance even after several appeals....that's when we wound up at Johns Hopkins were we found this doctor who specialized in exactly the condition my wife suffers from...as far as I can tell the only doctor anywhere on the east coast....he even teaches a course on it at Johns Hopkins University and has published several research papers on auto immune Encephalitis....he concurred with the treatments prescribed by the Jefferson doctor and did 3 days worth in January at the brand new $1 Billion John Hopkins Hospital in downtown Baltimore...treatments were like a chemotherapy...a 6 hour drip mixture of blood products and medicine designed to build up the immune system....it takes a few months to notice any improvement but we are seeing it now.....and the insurance company for some reason paid for all of the treatments at Johns Hopkins....lol......the doctors may decide to do more treatments later in the year but for now she seems to be doing so well that Dr. V doesn't want to do more because there is risk as with any blood product transfusion....the next step is the ENT doc next week to see if her continuing sensory and balance problems are inner ear related.....we think that's very possible......thanks again for all the prayers...we are grateful!!!...:D
