Old Titan
Observations from the NCAA tournament bracket released today: • Southland gets two teams in: Southeastern Louisiana gets the a #4 Seed in Baton Rouge (LSU) as the automatic qualifier. Regular season champ Sam Houston State gets a #3 Seed in Ft. Worth (TCU) , faces Missouri Valley tournament champ and #2 Seed Dallas Baptist (you read that right). • Summit League tourney champ North Dakota State goes to Corvallis, OR as a #4 Seed to take on overall #1 Seed Oregon State. Technically, that makes the Bison the 64th-ranked team in the 64-team field, but they're more accurately just the weakest of the #4 Seeds out west; can't imagine they wouldn't give eastern #4 Seed Youngstown State (16-36) a run for their money. • Oklahoma State is hosting a regional in Stillwater, but they got paired up with Oregon State for a Super Regional, making them technically the #16 national seed, which again is more indicative of the weakness of the West and Midwest in comparison to the South and Atlantic Coast. Someone west of the Mississippi needed to pair up with the Beavers in the Super Regional bracket, and there were only FOUR other teams that met that criteria among the 16 regional hosts (TCU, Rice, Cal Poly and Oklahoma State). Remember a time when USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Cal-Fullerton, Wichita State, etc, were locks for hosting regionals in the West? Not anymore... • ORU went 4-9 in the regular season vs. five teams that made the field: Texas Tech (0-4), Dallas Baptist (1-2), Oklahoma State (1-1), Kansas (1-0), and Sam Houston State (1-2). ORU did not play Southeastern Louisiana in the staggered Southland Conference regular season schedule. • And when was the last time regional rivals Oklahoma, Wichita State and ORU were all three not in the field? I bet it's been a while... • Mike Minyard's Liberty Flames got in as an at-large; they're a #3 Seed in Charlottesville (Virginia) going up against #2 Seed Arkansas. MM must be thinking like Indiana Jones right about now: "Razorbacks....why did it have to be Razorbacks??" • The SEC got a record TEN teams in the field - and not one of them is Sunny Golloway's Auburn Tigers. That makes me smile... 2014 NCAA College Baseball Tournament Bracket
Old Titan
• And when was the last time regional rivals Oklahoma, Wichita State and ORU were all three not in the field? I bet it's been a while... Love answering my own question, and it's a doozy: the last time Wichita State, Oklahoma and Oral Roberts were all three out of the NCAA baseball championship tournament was 1971 - 43 years ago! For some perspective: regional power Tulsa hosted the "District 5 Play-Off" that year, a one game contest vs. Big EIGHT representative Iowa State. Only 23 teams nationally qualified for the eight district play-offs. ORU wasn't even playing a D-1 schedule in 1971, and WSU dropped baseball from 1971 to 1977, but by the late '70's both were national powers along with the resurgent Sooners, followed by Oklahoma State at the end of the decade. Tulsa could not/would not keep pace competitively or financially with their area rivals, and disbanded their baseball program in 1980. Hammersmith
NDSU is gonna get waxed out at Oregon State....but at least they are in......ORU is sitting home again.....geez...... Surprisingly not. Their pitcher completely shut us down(14 strikeouts - no walks), but our guy did pretty good to them. Final score was 2-1 Oregon State. Our run came off a early HR; theirs came from an early fielder's choice and a late HR. We almost took the lead in the 9th with a deep ball with a runner at first, but it came about ten feet short(fielder was well into the warning track). We play UNLV in about 45min on ESPN3(3pm CST). Very classy Beaver fans. Gave our pitcher a standing ovation when he left in the 8th. Just a great game overall. And (5)Florida State is about to go home. Got upset by Georgia Southern yesterday and down 6 runs to Alabama with 5 outs to go. Seminoles haven't scored a run yet in the tourney. theeagleman5
NDSU did fight hard last night... they play UNLV shortly in an elimination game.....SE Louisiana survived today beating Bryant while SHSU plays TCU in a winners bracket game later tonight....and yes, Florida State is the first national seed to be eliminated losing on their home field two straight games.....right now Geo. Southern and Kennesaw State are the two teams in that winners bracket....who would have thunk it?....Liberty has also been sent home....losing to Arkansas yesterday and then Bucknell this afternoon.... Hammersmith
Bison lose in another 2-1 heartbreaker. Runners on 2nd & 3rd to end the game, but just couldn't get them home. Looking forward to seeing you guys next season.
theeagleman5
NDSU represented the Summit well....no embarrassment losing to Oregon St. and UNLV by a run.....
TrueBlue82
Pretty interesting that the first fifteen teams to go 0-2 and head home (one location was delayed by rain) represented a pretty good cross section of seeds. #1 - 2 (Florida and Florida State - ouch!) #2 - 3 (including DBU) #3 - 6 #4 - 4 The Summit was represented well with two tough losses, and both Southland teams survived the first cut. If Sam Houston makes it through, a matchup at Cal Poly or Pepperdine is very winnable.
theeagleman5
How about SHSU going 22 innings with TCU last night in the second longest game in NCAA playoff history.....unfortunately the Bearkats fell, 3-2....but they came back earlier today and beat Siena 9-2 to advance to the finals tonight in a rematch vs. TCU....that game is currently in the 8th with the Horned Frogs up 4-1....SE Louisiana was eliminated by Houston 9-5.....
