Bogus Smith
Friday night's game will be the last opportunity for the home crowd to see Alex Gonzalez in an ORU uniform at JLJ. Unless something goes wrong in the next few weeks of the season, Cheech will finish his career at ORU this season and be a very high-round draft choice in the June draft. Every outing for Cheech has been attended by the top-tier scouts - home and away. He is on the MLB radar screen and rightfully so. If you want to see a special game tomorrow night and you're in the Tulsa area, come out and "pack the park"! Likewise, this weekend will also be the last weekend that Cheech's mom will be attending a game in Tulsa - a very nice lady and (for those have been to a game she has attended) very entertaining! ORUalum
Draft Watch: Righty Gonzalez coming on strong Link with video Looking for a pitcher who is doing nothing but moving up, and quickly? Then look no further than Alex Gonzalez of Oral Roberts University. The tall and lean right-hander has been performing well all spring, but he seems to be pouring it on even more now. On Friday, he was a tough-luck loser against McNeese State, giving up two earned runs (three total) while striking out 11 and allowing just four hits in a complete-game effort. Gonzalez has a nasty fastball-slider combination with excellent command. Some think he can be a Mariano Rivera-like reliever who gets to the big leagues, while others think he can start. Whatever the role, it looks like Gonzalez is working is way into the first-round picture.
theeagleman5
Sounds like Gonzalez is going to be a Top 35 pick in the June Draft....he's gonna go late first or early 2nd round.....TheEagleman is going to miss our ace!...
ManiacAlum
A few of the mock drafts that I saw had him as high as 14th. Don't know how reliable those are but still pretty awesome.
ORUalum
Jim Callis of Baseball America recently released his Mock Draft 3.0...it sounds like Cheech will not get past the middle of the 1st round He has Gonzalez going 15th to Arizona with a ceiling of 7th to Boston..LINK. 7. BOSTON RED SOX: If Minnesota doesn’t take Stewart, Boston will pounce on him. If he’s not available, the Red Sox likely will choose between the Georgia prep outfielders, and they’re split internally on which way to go. They also could look at Ball or college righthanders Shipley, Ryne Stanek (Arkansas) and maybe even Alex Gonzalez (Oral Roberts). 8. KANSAS CITY ROYALS: It will be an upset it Kansas City doesn’t pick a pitcher. Assuming Stewart and Shipley are gone, the Royals would choose between Ball, California high school righthander Phil Bickford and Gonzalez. 15. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS: The mini-run on position players ahead of them probably will push Arizona toward a pitcher, unless it goes for Smith. Stanek and Gonzalez would be the most attractive arms, with Jacksonville righthander Chris Anderson and Clarkin perhaps in the mix. PROJECTED PICK: Alex Gonzalez (Mock draft 1.0/2.0: Hunter Renfroe/Dominic Smith). 17. CHICAGO WHITE SOX: Chicago loves athletic outfielders but appears to be targeting college arms such as Stanek, Gonzalez and Anderson more than Ervin, Wilson and Judge. Bogus Smith
That's great news for Alex. To have decided to go to college vs. accepting $225K as an 11th Round pick of the Orioles will certainly pay him dividends. Not exactly sure what a signing bonus for a mid-first round pick is these days, but it will be a lot more than $225K. I couldn't be happier for Cheech and his future. I hope he has a quick rise to the Show. We should have a similar scenario in next year's draft with Jose Trevino. If we can get him from behind the plate day-to-day, Jose will be a monster next year and will have as many scouts looking at him as we had watching Cheech this year. Jose is a potential first-rounder if he can stay injury-free. It's a lot of fun to watch him play....he's like a kid in a candy store when he's on the field.
