Holtontulsa
dsummitfan, I brought up the same issue a couple years ago only to have my post removed and asked not to "air dirty laundry" of the athletic department. It isn't worth wasting your time or energy. You and I and R2B1 are not the only ones who see these things but there isn't anything we can do...... TMH is probably right, let it go unless you want a storm of kool-aid drinkers on ya!

r2b1
Dsummit - I did look it up and easily found that you are incorrect. http://www.ncaa.org/...ix/faq.html#how Please check your facts before posting. Why start now?
oruvoice
dsummitfan...you are missing the point. In regards to the white out and bobbleheads, those are paid by SPONSORS. If a sponsor chooses to spend money on men's basketball instead of women's, that is their prerogative. There are two seperate issues here. When it comes to promotion and sponsor dollars, title 9 doesn't apply. ORU athletics/marketing does everything they can. Trust me, if you can line up some sponsors to pay big bucks to promote women's games, they'd be happy to take your call.
EaglesFan
Beating a dead horse … The bottom line is that you can’t “white out†the arena for a women’s basketball game in this day-and-age. You can’t give away enough seats to fill up the lower bowl! ORU has tried. Even on the school-kids give-away games, ORU doesn’t fill up the lower bowl. Free shirts and bobble-heads aren’t going to put 5,000 fans in the seats. All the promotion we’ve got can’t convince people that women’s basketball is a high enough caliber to come out and watch. $5 tickets and general admission seating (where you can get the best seats in the house) still don’t bring in crowds of over 1,500 … even when we have an entertaining product on the floor. I love watching these women’s games the last 3-years … but not so much before that, when the entertaining style of play, and star-power, wasn’t consistently there. For a game against a cross-town rival … or a well promoted NIT game against Arkansas can’t get 2,000 people in the seats … what can you do? A WNBA women’s team in Tulsa is lucky to outdraw ORU on an average night. (“The dogs don’t like the dog food.â€) With the exception of Tennessee and Connecticut, even the NCAA knows that “equal amounts of money spent on media, promotions…†Isn’t going to pack the house for a gal’s basketball game. Our gals receive equitable treatment and benefits. But, even die-hard ORU supporters won’t come to a women’s game unless it’s for some kind of NCAA tournament event … and they won’t, anytime soon. Enjoy the gal’s games while we can in the comfort of the best arena in this part of the country! The product on the floor is great these days … and the quality and entertainment value of the production every game is great too. It’s a well kept secret … but it is what it is! That’s my opinion…

r2b1
Good post, EaglesFan! Agreed. Hard to argue. Just one correction....women's games are now $10 as of this season.
tmh8286
Agreed. Hard to argue. Just one correction....women's games are now $10 as of this season. Yeah - caught me off guard when I forgot to bring my ticket to a game.
dsummitfan
Ya, they double ticket prices in one year!!! LOL... Voice I understand and agree that if the donor says hey "I want my money to go to this or that" they ATH dpt has to do so! I was personally told that the athletic dpt pays around 3000.00 per home conf. game to be televised and the summit league pays an additional 1000.00 for it (Total cost 4000.00 per game to be televised) woudn't they have to do something in equal value for the women as well.. I mean, that constitutes media coverage, right?
oruvoice
Yes, there is a fee to braodcast games, but that money (and more) is made up in advertising revenue. I wish it were different, but sponsors aren't willing to fork over advertising bucks for women's hoops at ORU. If you/we could find companies willing to advertise on ORU women's basketball broadcasts, they would be on the air. Hopefully there will one day be a market for such! As of now, there is not. oruvoice
Not shameful. Simple supply/demand economics. I hope one day, in the near future, the demand for ORU women's b-ball sponsorship, TV advertising, attendance, etc., is equal or greater than men's hoops. That would be AWESOME! Love me some women's hoops. But, right now, it just isn't.
tmh8286
shameful While I don't necessarily agree, based on the reasons oruvoice stated above, I do appreciate your passion for the program, dsummitfan. Great fans like you are what college athletics is all about. Keep it up!

Golfdad
Ok, I've got to weigh in on this one, having perspective from many angles on this subject. I have coached many years of youth basketball, both Boys & Girls. I also have a Daughter that is an ORU Senior, & student athlete. Probably no mystery what sport (from my handle), but I also have a 16 year old Son, so I see the issue from a very balanced position. Dsummitfan, I understand your frustration, however, oruvoice has nailed it with his posts, and I can gaurantee you it is not because he does not support Women's athletics. There is no person on the planet with more respect for female athletes than myself, but I also know the reality of the marketplace, and ORU cannot change that reality no matter how much advertising they do for women's sports. Putting the majority of marketing dollars into what for ORU is no doubt the "flagship" sport, (Men's Basketball) gets more return, and also, more benefits for all sports Tier 1 and otherwise, than forcing them to market all equally. My point is, as a proud ORU parent of a non tier 1 sport athlete, I see the benefits of an athletic dept. that sees the marketplace clearly, and puts the dollars where they get the most return. Kind of like capitalism vs socialism. Almost always, demanding equality of outcome sinks, rather than lifts all boats. Our family has not missed a Men's or Women's game, and we support both equally.... but fan support in the general public just is not near the same for Men's & Women's sports. If you try to see the big picture... I think you will have to agree. My Daughter's sport, while many absolutely love it,... will never get the support that Men's or Women's basketball gets, but I understand the system, and truly appreciate the support she does get from great ORU fans on this board. Tough to take your family to every Men's & Women's game at same ticket price for both. I would love to see as many in the stands as possible for our great Ladies team. WE draw more by far than TU for the Women!
