Crowds up slightly for Summit event, but ESPNU and scoreboard fall short

While Sioux Falls did not outdo itself, the city passed another test in its third go as host of the Summit League basketball tournament.

The four-day, 16-team event that concluded Tuesday with the South Dakota State women and Oakland men earning berths in the NCAA Division I championships brought in 32,460 people, second-most in Summit history. It was an improvement of about 2,000 over last year and about 2,000 shy of the record set in 2009. Yes, Sioux Falls now owns the top three spots.

This was also the smoothest of the three in terms of execution, according to Summit commissioner Tom Douple, with very few glitches or uneasy moments behind the scenes. He did, however, have two complaints, and both proved fairly public.

First, the on-air crew that called the women's championship game on ESPNU repeatedly referred to the host Jackrabbits as "San Diego State." Although both SDSUs have had solid women's programs the past few years, the local squad wears blue and yellow, while the West Coast club is red and black.

The two-woman crew also stated that Oakland University is located in Rochester, Minn., rather than the correct location of Rochester, Mich.
