UND has missed it's opportunity to joining the Summit League this year.

UND president Robert Kelley says he talked with League commissioner Tom Douple over the last few days and learned UND has missed the scheduling window for the 2011-2012 season.

Summit League will have to wait another year for UND

GRAND FORKS – The University of North Dakota will not be able to get into The Summit League athletic conference’s 2011-2012 schedule, President Robert Kelley said Tuesday.

GRAND FORKS – The University of North Dakota will not be able to get into The Summit League athletic conference’s 2011-2012 schedule, President Robert Kelley said Tuesday.

It appears that this would’ve happened anyway if the State Board of Higher Education retired UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname at the board meeting last week.

Kelley said he spoke after meeting with league commissioner Tom Douple and was told it was already too late. The league was putting the finishing touches on the schedule and was working on contracts among league members, he said. “The bottom line is that door has pretty much closed on us.”

At the board meeting mid-January, Kelley and Athletic Director Brian Faison had told the board that there was still about 30 days left to end the controversy over the nickname. At that point, that meant getting rid of the nickname – before the door completely closed.

They also warned of the high costs of sending teams all over the Great West Conference, whose members are more geographically dispersed compared to The Summit League, and of the opportunities lost in a stronger fan response, and revenue, from playing old rivals, such as North Dakota State.

The league has UND’s membership application, but won’t act on it until the nickname issue is settled. Under a settlement with the NCAA, which considers American Indian nicknames offensive, the university can either win the blessings of the state’s two Sioux tribes by Nov. 30, 2010, or retire the nickname.

At UND’s urging, the board has tried to move the deadline forward so the university can get into the Summit League.

A lawsuit by nickname supporters from one of the tribes, the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation, stopped the board from retiring the nickname after its Oct. 31, 2009, deadline. The board won that suit, but chose to not take action in January and this month out of respect for the Supreme Court, which is scheduled to hear the issue on March 23.

Kelley said he’s told North Dakota University System Chancellor Bill Goetz what he learned from the league commissioner and, informally, spoken with board President Richie Smith. Disseminating the news to the entire board, he said, is Goetz’s authority.

Smith, like the rest of the board, was under the impression that there was a single “drop-dead deadline,” Kelley said. The reality, he said, is there are a series of deadlines that gradually reduces options for a university seeking late entry into the schedule.

Now that it’s clearly too late for 2011-2012, that doesn’t necessarily mean UND can just wait around until the Nov. 30 deadline, according to Kelley. Other universities want to join The Summit League, too, and it’s not clear the league would want to expand beyond adding one more member, he said.

The league’s members will confer in March by conference call and again in June.

Kelley said the league commissioner told him he’d ask league members in March if it would be possible to accept UND’s application contingent on the nickname issue being settled.

Of course, one way or the other, it will be settled by Nov. 30 because of the NCAA settlement.

Similar to us, most if not all of their home games are broadcasted on Fox College Sports. It would be nice to add a team to the Summit that saw the value of investing in a television deal.

Good point. It would be nice to add a school like UND that has a TV contract. Maybe NDSU will get its act together.

I think that UND focuses primarily on hockey... their FCS deal was done to showcase their hockey team. They are a hockey school first so their addition probably wouldn't help us. There are several players from UND playing on both the Canadian mens (Jonathan Toews), USA mens (Zach Parise), and USA womens teams in Vancouver.

  • 1 month later...

I almost fell over, UND is claiming that TOM DOUPLE will consider them at the JUNE meeting. ARE YOU F_____ KIDDING ME??

If any of you have watched the total embarassment of an university the last week should know that THEIR OWN BASKETBALL COACH was quoted as saying "Id rather have the nickname than the summit league" <<< in a HUGE CONDISCENDING way!!

Their fans, coaches and admin has RIPPED on the Summit league nonstop, they belittle it, sayings it's a rinky dink and below them. email douple@thesummitleague.org

These arrogant pricks are the same people demanding the TRIBES let them use their nickname sioux even though in 1992 the tribe council voted 12-0 to have UND STOP USING IT. and again in 1999.

DO NOT LET THEM IN> Contact your president & AD. their fans are hockey fans, they will fight you in grand forks, at summit tourney they are horrible individuals'.
