ORUalum
great accomplishment for mike carter and everyone in the athletic department! Banner year USD also was one of just 10 Division I schools to earn NCAA championship berths in baseball and men's and women's basketball. Those 10 and their total athletics expenses last year: School Expenses Texas $89.3 million Texas A&M $69.4 million Oklahoma $69.2 million Stanford $63.8 million Georgia $61.6 million North Carolina $58.2 million Louisville $51.5 million Vanderbilt $39 million USD $15.1 million Oral Roberts $9 million Source: U.S. Dept. of Education USD was one of only two schools to achieve such a triple crown without belonging to one of the lucrative Bowl Championship Series conferences. The other eight teams that did it each have athletic expense budgets of at least $39 million. USD and Oral Roberts did it despite having expense budgets under $16 million and undergraduate enrollments under 6,000. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/usd/20080612-9999-1s12usd.html
TrueBlue82
While acknowledging the banner year, it is important to note that all the schools besides ORU and USD offer football, so it's not a fair apples vs. apples comparison.
ORUJason
I agree that obviously the BCS conference teams have much larger budgets due to football, larger enrollments, larger fan bases, etc. But that makes the accomplishment by ORU all the more impressive. USD actually plays non-scholarship football, its not anywhere near as expensive as playing at the BCS level or even the level at which NDSU plays but it is football none the less. Are you confusing the University of San Diego (the subject of the article) with the University of South Dakota?
FargoBison
Are you confusing the University of San Diego (the subject of the article) with the University of South Dakota? Nope, they play football and they have a solid program for being a non-scholarship program... http://usdtoreros.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/usd-m-footbl-body.html They play in the Pioneer League with likes of Drake, Butler, Davidson, Dayton, and Valpo.
