I'm glad that they're here for another 4 wins under our 40+ win seasons; however, I'm more glad to have another baseball stadium that is better than a city park ballpark!! In looking at other college baseball schedules published, all of their schedules start on February 22. I had heard that games could not start prior to March 1, but maybe this is a Summit League rule (or maybe I just misunderstood). I had heard that we lost a home weekend series with Long Beach State that was already on the books because of having to move the start of the season back three weeks (and accommodating more Summit League teams). I hope that I just heard something wrong. tmh8286 Posted October 13, 2007 Share Posted October 13, 2007 That seems late for college baseball. I remember once several years ago we had our home opener on January 31! I just went to the Media Guide to check on that and found that it was a conference game, against Southern Utah, that we played that early. I also noticed that in the late 90's and early 00's we started playing several years during the first week of February. Not so much during the Walton era, but under Golloway we regularly had more than a dozen games (one season we had sixteen) before March 1. I don't think "competing on a national level" has EVER been a goal of the Summit League, as evidenced by the poor quality of all teams except one. If this truly IS a league rule, ORU will ultimately be pulled closer to the level of other Summit League teams, rather than us driving the level of competition up. Can you imagine if the PGA had put restrictions in place to bring Tiger down so others could compete? Instead, several guys have stepped up their game to make the PGA competitive again - and it's a much better tour as a result. The March 1 rule seems to fly in the face of every other initiative that the league has proposed to IMPROVE the level of play. So much so, that you have to wonder if their are alterior motives involved... We always said that we wanted to "own the Mid-Con (Summit)" - I guess this is the price you pay for success! I've never been a strong proponent of looking elsewhere - I think overall the Summit League fits ORU pretty well - but if measures are taken to create parity by limiting one team rather than bringing the others up to that level, then there's a problem. It seems like it puts more pressure on ORU and other conference schools to get enough games and wins to impress the NCAA when they are seeding teams into the NCAA tournament. With weather cancellations, etc. it is hard enough to get a respectable number of wins to get a number 3-seed. It seems like it forces the league teams to schedule a lot more midweek games, if they want a shot at 40 wins. Just because the Northern teams can't really start home games in February or March, the rest of the league shouldn't have to pay the price for that. That should be their cross to bare, not ours. Today I received my official Summit League lapel pen, so I'm a devoted fan of the conference now. I never even had an official lapel pen from the Mid-Con. A member institution shall not play its first contest (game or scrimmage) with outside competition in baseball prior to the following dates: "(a) Nonchampionship Segment. September 7 or the institution's first day of classes, whichever is earlier. "( Championship Segment. The Friday in February that is 13 weeks before the Friday immediately preceding Memorial Day." Source: NCAA Division I Board of Directors [Management Council (Pacific-10 Conference)]. Effective Date: August 1, 2007 In other words this year the date is Feb 22nd. Also, Oregon State goes to BYU just before coming to Tulsa. Should make for a great home series for us to attend at the end of March. That could be beneficial for us.
