Asking for prayers

One of our pitchers was involved in an accident and the most recent word out of Sioux Falls doesn't sound good, so I would like to ask anyone who is willing to say a little prayer for Kevin and his family.  Thank you in advance.

SDSU baseball player in hospital with head injury

Kevin Morsching, a pitcher on the South Dakota State baseball team, is hospitalized at Avera McKennan due to a head injury suffered Monday evening.

According to Jackrabbits coach Reggie Christiansen, the 21-year-old upcoming junior from Rapid City was alone Monday in Brookings, perhaps skateboarding, when he was hurt. Police reports state that he was discovered by a passerby and eventually flown to Sioux Falls.

Further details about both the incident and the severity of the injuries, delivered on Friday afternoon by Christiansen with permission from the Morsching family, were vague.

?We really don?t know that much about the situation,? said Christiansen, who is beginning his fourth year at NCAA Division I SDSU. ?It?s a head injury and we really don?t know where we?re at right now.?

A former Rapid City Journal male athlete of the year while at St. Thomas More High School, the 6-foot, 200-pound Morsching joined the Jacks ? and younger brother Kirby, also a pitcher on the team ? after one season at Midland College. Although his debut season at SDSU in 2006 was cut short by an elbow injury, he went 5-2 in 15 relief appearances this spring, helping the club win 34 games, and spent the summer playing for the college league Humboldt (Calif.) Crabs.  .  .  .  (read more)

He is in our thoughts and prayer.  We know first hand what it's like to get that dreadful phone call at 2:00 AM.  Our oldest son was in a very bad accident a few years back where a young lady was killed.  Our son was ejected from the back seat and somehow pulled the others from the burning vehicle.  He was then flown to a hospital in PA.  We got the call at 2:00 AM with the news. Reading this story brought back a flood of memories.

God always answers prayer.  He will never leave or forsake us. Thank God our son is alive and well today.

God Bless this young man and his family. We know God is with them.

SDSU mourns death of student-athlete Kevin Morsching

South Dakota State University baseball player Kevin Morsching passed away late Sunday night at a Sioux Falls hospital, one week after being injured in an accident in Brookings.

?It is a devastating loss to South Dakota State, and more importantly, his friends and family,? Jackrabbit baseball coach Reggie Christiansen said. ?My heart really goes out to Kevin and his family. Kevin affected a lot of people whether you met him for just a few minutes or knew him for a lifetime.?

A biology major from Rapid City, the 21-year-old was to have begun his junior season at SDSU this fall. A pitcher for the storied Post 22 American Legion program and 2004 graduate of St. Thomas More High School, Morsching played one season at Midland College (Texas) before transferring to SDSU. He made two relief appearances early in the 2006 season before suffering a season-ending arm injury.

Morsching returned to the mound in time for the 2007 campaign and was one of the team?s top relievers, compiling a 5-2 record with a save in 15 appearances as the Jackrabbits ended the season with a 34-19 record and won the season-ending Division I Independent Tournament. He was the winning pitcher in the Jackrabbits? season-opening win over Kansas, and also was credited with the victory in relief in the middle game of a three-game series against Northern Colorado played in Rapid City.  .  .  .  (read more)

Please keep Kevin's family and friends in your prayers.

Just before midnight Sunday, Kevin Morsching's heart rate jumped, as if he was getting the call.

Then he was gone.

Six days after suffering traumatic brain injuries in what was likely a skateboarding accident, the South Dakota State relief pitcher from Rapid City died at Avera McKennan hospital. The 21-year-old was surrounded by family members, friends and teammates.

"I think the last couple days it became the understanding that at some point he was going to go," said Jackrabbits baseball coach Reggie Christiansen, speaking on behalf of the Morsching family. "You try to best prepare yourself for that, but then when you get the call it still doesn't make it any better."  .  .  .  (read more)

I'm so very sorry to hear that, rabbit.  What a tragedy this is for everyone.  Rest assured that we'll continue to pray for his family.  Such a freak accident to take the life of someone so young.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the SDSU community.

Daring to heal

SDSU pitcher's tragic death links teammates, family in struggle to forge ahead

Terry Vandrovec • tvandrovec@argusleader.com • April 27, 2008

BROOKINGS - When her cell phone rang, Kim Morsching was a couple blocks from home. She figured that her husband was calling to ask if she would swing by McDonald's, their daughter's favorite fast-food stop.

French fries. That's what Kim was thinking about in the moments before being told of a skateboarding accident that would ultimately claim the life of her oldest child, Kevin, a standout college pitcher.

In an instant last summer, the Morsching family and the South Dakota State baseball team were brought together by losing one of two common members.

Although healing has begun, the suffering continues. Family and teammates grieve as one, blurring the line between blood and baseball. . . . (read more)
