Eaglefan 21 Posted March 25 Posted March 25 The good news/maybe bad news is that NDSU and UND lost nearly their entire starting lineup to the portal, they are starting over as well. If they are right back to the top of the standings next year once again, then we may have a coaching problem. I do think middle of the pack is a good goal for us.

I agree that expectations at ORU have NEVER been to make the tournament or be a conference contender every season. This is one of the worst stretches (if not the worst) in program history and losing 20+ games playing a Summit League schedule should be inexcusable. I have been around ORU basketball since 1985 and I would agree that we do not have a consistent commitment to winning and that may not be intentional. I know many Alumni who do not feel connected to the University. Realizing that most alumni live out of state or in other countries is all the more reason the University should create a program to keep alumni connected to what is going on. Because they have not done this consistently we do not have a consistent winning tradition. Therefore for many decades ORU looks for the homerun hitter who will cough up big bucks. It is wonderful to have home run hitters and we need them but how much $$$ have we left on the table by not adequately making alumni feel valued and important? At this stage in history there are many thousands of alumni. Multiply that by $25, $50, $100, $1000 etc. This adds up to a lot of $$. Most people have to have a connection and a reason to give. Bottom line I have never felt we have a $$ shortage but instead a sincere genuine PR shortage. When people are treated with unconditional love and appreciation they naturally want to give. Being a spirit filled Christian University this is an advantage that will always be on our side when we genuinely use it! My advice: ask the alumni how they feel and what they would like to be different. 2 2

To my knowledge (which I openly admit is not what it used to be, in terms of the internal workings at 81st & Lewis), ORU Athletics has not typically - and when, fairly superficially - enlisted the services of traditional marketing and public relations agencies for any extended period of time, for the same tired reasons that flailing corporations use, ranging from "those people cost too much", to "they're too dificult to work with", to "they wouldn't understand what we're about", to the one that's ALWAYS been a deal-breaker at ORU: "(fill in president's name at the time) will never approve this". Consequently, while some years there might be well-meaning input from assorted "marketing types" who at that particular time happen to be orbiting the ORU Athletics landscape (for free season tickets, related perks, or their kid is on a team), the ORU marketing effort as such is typically the result of internal & organic game-planning among a very limited number of people, with a healthy dose of "when we win, they will come". Also, there's also a tendency (at EVERY college) to imitate anything other programs (particularly perceived rivals and/or compatriots) are doing with any success, typically gleaned from new hires from other schools, breakout session attendance at annual sports marketing conventions, the ocassional Zoom-call webinar, etc. Not to sound like a broken record (remember vinyl?) as in my recent posts on other topics, but perhaps not the textbook approach for long-term success?

Did they read my post yesterday??? That's quite a coup for ORU - he no doubt had a lot of options. (For those who might not know, Matt Pinnell is the currrent Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma and an ORU alumnus. His second term of office ends this year. A thread re: his appointment is already started in the "Free For All" forum.)
eagle88 Posted March 26 Posted March 26 I have no inside information but this seems positive for ORU. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same old things expecting different results! There is always attrition in any business or organization so it is vital to open up new avenues/income streams. Hopefully Matt can really help out. I have heard good things about him. Could this be a step in progressive thinking at ORU?
