Old Titan Posted September 3 Posted September 3 BREAKING NEWS FROM SOME GUY'S BASEMENT: Hard to fathom how this makes any sense for ORU right now, unless it somehow means more money and/or fewer expenses program-wide. ...but it is kinda cool how Paul Mills' less-fortunate brother "J.Y." has pushed his coffee table and pleather sofa together to create his "Big Mountain Breaking News" console.

I agree, OT. While the geographic footprint makes some sense, joining the United as the only non-football playing school besides UT-Arlington doesn't seem to be a positive move for ORU or for the conference. But, if it means getting away from Midco Minus, my opinion could be swayed! 2
Old Titan Posted October 2 Author Posted October 2 Basement update from Paul Mills' less-fortunate brother...his "sources" are talking! #breakingnews
ORU82 Posted October 3 Posted October 3 If we join the UAC or whatever it is, the AD and anyone else approving such a move should be fired immediately for gross dereliction of duty. If that is what the present administration is shooting for then just drop to D-III and quit leading on the fan base/donor base that we are trying to get to the proverbial "next level". Such a move and we can all proclaim with confidence that we now own the basement of NCAA athletics. BTW, this podcast is a classic example of why you should back away from the liquor cabinet and put down the crack pipe before posting. 1

My text exchange yesterday with a particular ORU Athletic Dept. dude: ME: Is an announcement coming soon that ORU is joining the United Athletic Conference? ORU ATHLETICS DUDE: What is that? ME: Should I take that as a "No way", or a "No comment"? ORU ATHLETICS DUDE: Take it as a "No idea". Never heard of it. ME: That's all I need to know. Moral To The Story: beware of hot dogs from turnpike gas stations and conference alignment forecasts from guys in their mom's basement. 2

I'm not sure what is more depressing...staying in the Summit and losing schools like Denver, then back-filling with lower level scrubs or moving to the UAC?
dave Posted October 13 Posted October 13 As I look at the teams in the United Athletic Conference it doesn't seem to me that the competition is any better than the Summit. However it sure would be easier on the travel budget and provide for more natural rivalries if ORU was able to be in that conference. 1 1

I would think recruiting would be much better in these states as well. I'm genuinely surprised by the complete shutdown of the idea by some on the board. I've witnessed so many conversations about how we have to get out of the Summit for one reason or the other. The UAC could represent a fresh start in a relatively new conference, how often does that opportunity come around? Hypothetically, we could come into this conference and be one of the big dogs for baseball and basketball. Every season, we talk about how being in the Summit for baseball leads to an almost guaranteed NCAA tourney bid for our guys (sorry 2024 team, I loved watching you!), and how great that is for our team. But when it comes to basketball, some members of this board would rather fire athletic department staff or drop to a lower level of competition? I'm just not following the logic here. I think every board member who has been watching the conference realignment that effects ORU and the Summit knows that SDSU, NDSU, and St. Thomas could all be gone at the drop of a hat. I'd rather be ahead of those schools on hitting the "Eject" button out of the Summit. And if any of those 3 teams leave, the Summit might be considered one of the weakest 5 conferences in the country, well below the UAC imo. 2
Texasgrip Posted October 14 Posted October 14 FWIW; at a quick glance, they don't field Men's soccer in the UAC. Wouldn't ORU prefer a "complete" lateral move if they were to consider it?
ORUJason Posted October 14 Posted October 14 The Summit League seems more stable to me than the brand new rebranded WAC conference which has been a turnstile for members. Also from a travel standpoint GA, KY, AL and TN are as far away as the Dakotas or Denver. I think the travel would be nearly a wash. However it is colder in the Dakotas with worse weather in February. Now that all 4 Dakota schools and St Thomas are in the conference, the travel situation is pretty good for the northern schools and that might provide more stability for a core group of schools to stay in the Summit for a long time. You never really know what is going to happen with conference realignment until it happens. It might be possible that UALR eventually ends up in the Summit if the United Conference doesn’t pan out.
oruvoice Posted October 14 Posted October 14 Perhaps we should consider a move to the Southland conference?!? 2

Bogus Smith Posted October 15 Posted October 15 With East Tennessee State going to the SoCon and UALR to the UAC, the OVC seems to be on shaky ground with a very tight travel footprint. Maybe a merger between the OVC and Summit could be in order??? Wouldn't Western Illinois just love that?? 2
Old Titan Posted October 20 Author Posted October 20 Unless/until it involves increased (any?) revenue for NIL from a better "TV" deal, all this mid-to-low-major conference realignment activity is tantamount to rearranging the deck chairs on The Titanic. #longview 1 1 2 1
