For some reason, Minnesota has been both a golden ring and a graveyard for college coaches for decades. It appears appealing - not a football school but in a power conference, metropolitan area to recruit from, good money and facilities, etc. But for whatever reason they just haven't had consistent success. Would think that Tubby must be pretty desperate to get out of Kentucky if he is willing to risk his career there, similar ro Alford leaving Iowa for New Mexico. It just shows how much networking in involved in this whole game, at least in some situations. ST. LOUIS -- Fresno State associate coach Heath Schroyer has reached an agreement to be the next head coach at Wyoming, a source told CBS SportsLine.com on Thursday. The school is expected to hold a press conference Friday. Schroyer is known as a defensive-minded coach with Mountain West Conference ties. He was with Steve Cleveland at BYU from 1997-98 to 2000-2001 before actually working under the man he will replace -- Steve McClain -- as an assistant at Wyoming in 2001-02. Schroyer spent the subsequent three seasons as the head coach at Portland State, where he compiled a 35-47 record. But after a 19-9 mark in 2004-05 Schroyer opted to rejoin Cleveland at Fresno State, where he has spent the past two years. Worth noting is that Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman was the AD at Portland State who hired Schroyer five years ago. That relationship made this search tough for any other candidates to crack, though Nebraska assistant Phil Mathews, Texas A&M assistant Jeremy Cox and Sam Houston State coach Bob Marlin were all considered possible replacements. Indiana State men's basketball coaching search nears conclusion Four finalists for position to be interviewed this week By Todd Golden The Tribune-Star TERRE HAUTE ? The Indiana State men?s basketball is making the turn and headed down the home stretch, but the finish line is likely still several days away. Indiana State Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman said Saturday that four finalists will be interviewed from Monday to Wednesday. Prettyman is not sure whether they will be off- or on-campus interviews, but he has previously stated that the final interviews will be with members of the ISU administration. The Tribune-Star has learned that Creighton assistant coach Kevin McKenna, Indiana assistant Ray McCallum and current Indiana State assistant Greg Lansing are three of the four finalists. The fourth finalist is not known. Oral Roberts coach Scott Sutton, Western Kentucky assistant Jeff Strohm, ex-Bowling Green coach Dan Dakich, ex-Wyoming coach Steve McClain, Southern California assistant Gib Arnold and Southern Indiana coach Rick Herdes have all been rumored to be candidates, but there has been no confirmation that any of them are finalists or that they?ve even been considered during the process.......LINK Possible replacements There will be plenty of names tossed around in the next week as replacements for Steve Alford. A look at some (and remember, this is only speculation, so use your imagination). Think BIG Tom Crean (Marquette) ? Another proven winner. Reached the Final Four a few years back, but would he want to get back to the Big Ten, where he was an assistant at Michigan State under Tom Izzo? Great Midwestern connections. Lon Kruger (UNLV) ? Solid Midwestern connections (was a winner at Illinois), and he's turned the Runnin' Rebels around. But is he someone who will stay around for a while? Steve Lavin (ex?UCLA) ? He went to five Sweet 16s at UCLA, but that wasn't enough for the Bruin faithful. Has Midwestern connections (a former Purdue assistant) and knows the conference during his work as an analyst on ESPN games. Looked into the North Carolina State job last year before turning it down. But he might find life better coaching everyone's teams from the sidelines than coaching his own. Bruce Pearl (Tennessee) ? The sound you would hear if Pearl would be hired would be heads exploding in Champaign, because Illinois fans (and some media types down that way) haven't forgiven him for taping a phone conversation with recruit Deon Thomas, then turning it over to the NCAA, when Pearl was an assistant at Iowa. He might be feeling some heat in Tennessee after gagging up a 20?point lead against Ohio State Thursday night. The Valley guys Dana Altman (Creighton) ? A favorite name among the Hawkeye faithful, primarily because he's put together winning teams with Iowa kids. Great Midwestern connections, but would a financial package at Iowa be any better than what he gets at Creighton? Chris Lowery (Southern Illinois) ? Let's see, the last two Saluki coaches (Bruce Weber and Matt Painter) have put together some successful Big Ten programs. Lowery can be had for the right price, and it might not break Iowa's bank. But Lowery is an SIU alum, and might be hard to pry away. Barry Hinson (Missouri State) ? The media would love him, fans would love him, and he can coach. Can he win at this level? Maybe. But his teams have barely missed the last two NCAA tournaments. Mark Turgeon (Wichita State) ? Could have named his price had the Shockers kept up their hot start to this season. Took a team to the Sweet 16 last season. But is Iowa a better situation than what he has now? And how hot of a commodity is he after not making it to any postseason tournament this season? Some other names Todd Lickliter (Butler) ? All he's done there is win. Two Sweet 16s, constant contenders for the Horizon League title. Solid Midwestern connections. Loyalty to Butler probably would make it hard for him to leave. Scott Sutton (Oral Roberts) ? Back?to?back NCAA tournament appearances after an NIT appearance. Two Mid?Continent Conference titles. Great coaching bloodline. But is going from the Mid?Con to the Big Ten too big of a step? Gregg Marshall (Winthrop) ? Seven NCAA tournaments in nine seasons at a small school is a major accomplishment. Appears headed to South Florida. Anthony Grant (VCU) ? One year as a head coach, and it was pretty successful (ask Duke). Long?time assistant at Florida who got a shot at a head coaching job. His teams play a smothering, physical defense. Scott Drew (Baylor) ? Son of Homer (Valparaiso coach). Knows the Midwest. Had a competitive team this year after putting back together that train wreck of a program. Arkansas wags are saying it's an all-or-nothing meeting: either he's gone immediately (fired or leaving for another job), or he gets a multi-year extension.
