Old Titan Posted April 30, 2025 Author Posted April 30, 2025 If I'm not mistaken, this represents ORU's first conference tournament championship not involving baseball or men's basketball since the Golden Eagles returned to Summit League play in 2014. Eleven seasons - that's quite a while!

TrueBlue82 Posted May 8, 2025 Posted May 8, 2025 The Golden Eagle victory at the Summit League Golf Tournament was not unexpected, as ORU was a slight favorite going into the tournament amongst the 11 team field (all nine Summit schools compete in Men's Golf, along with Northern Colorado and Weber State). But, HOW they won the tournament is quite an epic story. SDSU led the tourney after both day one and day two's 18 holes of play, and still had a significant five stroke lead over ORU in the final round after 45 total holes, with nine holes remaining. NDSU was lurking one stroke behind ORU, with USD another five strokes back, the only other team under par for the tournament. Two holes later, the lead was completely gone, with three teams now within one stroke. ORU took the lead for the first time in the tournament on hole #12, and never lost that lead over the final six holes. After 14 holes, the field had tightened, with four teams within four strokes, with only four holes to play in the championship. ORU had a slim two stroke lead headed to the final hole, and ended the tournament with an exclamation point, scoring two birdies on hole #18. Pretty impressive performance by the boys in Navy and Vegas, making a huge comeback and then finishing strong during crunch time! TrueBlue82 Posted May 3 Posted May 3 ORU is the odds-on favorite as the nine-team Summit League Men's Golf Championship gets underway Sunday-Tuesday in the Phoenix area (Mesa). ORU is currently ranked #103 in the NCAA, the highest ranking among Summit teams, followed by Denver (159), St. Thomas (168), SDSU (182), NDSU (188), USD (195), KC (197), UND (219), and Omaha (220). ORU also has the top-ranked individual golfer in the Summit (Jorge Sanchez Gutierrez - national rank of 418) and the #3 ranked Summit golfer Ben Gratzl (national #506). But, the strongest attribute of the team is depth. Each team selects five golfers to play each round, and the top four are added into the team score. Therefore, it's important to not only have the best golfers, but the "least worst". Here is where ORU shines, as their # 4 ranked golfer holds down the national ranking of #709, which is a higher rank than the BEST golfer on four Summit teams, and better than the second-best golfer of the other four Summit teams. So, on paper, this ORU squad looks really formidable. Unfortunately, they're playing on turfgrass, so anything can happen. Hoping that the ORU guys defend their Summit League title over the next few days! 2
TrueBlue82 Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Day one: ORU finishes the day in EIGHTH place out of nine. Eagles have some serious work ahead of them to get back in the hunt. 1
Old Titan Posted May 3 Author Posted May 3 Wow…wonder if anyone in the Summit League puts more money into golf than ORU? 1

Same thing happened to the women's team and they did not recover. I would expect that the same will hold true for the men as well. #RingBySpring may not have the same meaning for the golf teams this year.

I worked for a agricultural company for many years, and was heavily involved with a grass seed company that serviced some of the top golf courses in the country. Turfgrass is the common name used in the industry, for what most people just call grass, so it has become normalized for me. Dictionary definition: Turfgrasses provide essential aesthetic, recreational, and environmental benefits, such as erosion control, oxygen production, and cooling. Divided into cool-season and warm-season types, they are widely used in lawns, golf courses, and athletic fields. 1
oruvoice Posted May 4 Posted May 4 8th place is a little decieving. We are only 5 shots off the lead. 2 I like to rhyme...I like my beats funky...I'm spunky...I like my oatmeal lumpy.

Round 2 (mostly) in the books and looks like we're out of contention. I like to rhyme...I like my beats funky...I'm spunky...I like my oatmeal lumpy.
TrueBlue82 Posted May 4 Posted May 4 ORU moved up into a tie for fifth, but has virtually NO chance of winning the title, sitting 18 strokes behind NDSU with one round to go. Crazy tournament to say the least, as the individual leaderboard currently has a four way tie. Those four players’ national rankings compared to the 45 golfers playing in the tournament? #7, #29, #40, and #41. Either these guys are having the best tournament of their lives, or the ranking system is severely flawed (or both)!

Looks like the best we can do is 3rd or 4th place. Really disappointing. We're going to need baseball to win the regular season (basically done) and conference tournament to avoid being at the bottom of the Commissioner's Cup standings this year. We will never win another Commissioner's Cup again with the current situation in the Summit League. We don't field enough sports to gain the amount of points needed to win this "prestigious" award.
oruvoice Posted May 5 Posted May 5 I was curious, so I took a look... St. Thomas - 20 sports SDSU - 19 sports USD - 18 sports UND - 17 sports ORU - 16 sports NDSU - 16 sports Omaha - 15 sports UMKC - 14 sports And while I understand that your "prestigious" comment was a little dig, the Cup standings do give a good barometer of the overall athletic program. ORU only has 14 sports: Men's Women's Baseball Basketball Basketball Cross Country Cross Country Golf Golf Soccer Soccer Tennis Tennis Track & Field Track & Field Volleyball We don't have softball, swimming, diving, or hockey. Football is in a different league, which also supplements the Track & Field sport. UNO, UMKC, and ORU will never win another Commissioner's Cup in the current mix of schools that make up the Summit League.
