theeagleman5 Posted March 14 Posted March 14 Greg Marshall was always a pompous character on the court and usually off as well....TheEagleman didn't say the guy was humble just that maybe just maybe everything that happened to him may have humbled the former WSU coach...if not then shame on him....but...perhaps he is a different guy and might it be worth a 5 minute phone call just to find out....after all, didn't Rick Pitino get a 2nd chance at Iona/St. Johns after that Louisville stripper fiasco and Hugh Freeze at Liberty after his huge mess in the SEC....seems like ORU might be a place where 2nd chances abound if a man has the right attitude and humility........as you said DJ he likely does not need the $$$....but man he sure can coach.....and think of the national publicity...a man with an ego like Marshall might salivate at the opportunity to resurrect a mid major program like ORU..... Might also give Bill Haiston something to write about. 1 1

With the stuff he was known for doing, he’d need to start as the video coordinator and build trust over a span of 10 years before being able to take the reins

Unfortunately, you have to put up with his family if you hire him. 1

With 2:45 left, the officials made a questionable goal tending call, that kept WSU from getting within 2 points. Mills had a lot of animated words with the refs to no avail. The announcer actually agreed with Mills about the bad call. With 1.3 seconds left, the score was 80-83 and WSU's Beverly had 2 free throws. He had made all of his free throws up to that point, but missed both of them. Game over, but WSU was a feisty opponent. That was definitely a bad call. They were scrappy!

Oh some school will surely eventually...my statement was from the ORU perspective lol. We welcome all for redemption, but that definitely doesnt mean you'll get a leadership role 1
theeagleman5 Posted March 14 Posted March 14 Yeah guess it was just wishful thinking by TheEagleman...Marshall's wife might be the bigger problem...can you imagine her sitting in the same row as Mr. and Mrs. Smith at Mabee yelling those colorful words she enjoys spewing.... 1
ORUTerry Posted March 15 Posted March 15 I attended a home Wichita State game thanks to a client that is a huge donor/fan. We sat with Marshall’s family on the row behind the bench. It was quite the experience. His wife was really boisterous and actually conversed (huddled) with Greg during timeouts. Never saw that before…. or since. 1

ORU40 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 I really don't understand the animosity towards Mills; he did a great job for us, for whatever reason, he was lucky, the players made him look good, whatever the reason he made the most of it. Coaches say what they have to, to get the job and what is needed to keep the job. He answers to his family, we could have paid him $1.8mil per year for 5 years if we wanted to keep him, but we didn't. A little insider secret, what a coach or player or program staffer is saying is what they what said publicly and surprisingly its always positive, it's not wrong it's the way it is. I doubt any of the program insiders or anyone else, knew HCPM was negotiating with WSU? D1 basketball coaches are competitive and ambitious, they are not high school coaches or pastors, they may love the game and the kids, but they want top dollar for their efforts to better their family's situation, can't blame them for it as we all do the same! 1 4
theeagleman5 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Love you, #40 but Mills blew smoke up our butts and made us believe that this was his dream job...I get what you are saying but he made me believe him and I felt used....but I guess money talks even with "Godly coaches"....hope he is enjoying his $2 million a year and the pressures that come with it....i dont root against him but Mills is a snake charming phony... 1

ORU has had several coaches that were really good guys, that truly represented the universities mission, men of faith, but we fired them. So, we should not be surprised when coaches say what is expected to get or keep the job. What Mills said may have been accurate when he said it, but things change. I can't fault a man for doing what's best for his family. 3 3

I can't fault a man for doing what's best for his family. Mills tells folks that, following his 30-win season and second NCAA berth in three seasons, he was offered only a 5-figure bonus that he felt was insulting. This tipped the scales in favor of him “waking up” from his so-called dream job, realizing his only way to make significantly more money in the real world was by leaving.
theeagleman5 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Yeah I totally get it....and if ORU wasnt going to step up financially as Old Titan says then it makes sense.....TheEagleman just foolishly thought that not everyone is about the $$$....but college basketball pretty much is these days.....Paul Mills is not a bad guy....hope they do well in the NIT or CBI or whatever.....Villanova fired their coach today even though he had a winning record for his 3 seasons....expectations are higher there.....as I get older I am just losing a lot of my love of college sports....it's just become a money grab but i guess this is our society in 2025.....I wonder what Ken Trickey was being paid in 1974??....LOL.....yeah I know it ain't 50 years ago and we aren't in Oz any more, Dorothy...... 1
Otis 83 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 @ORU40I'm with TheEagleman on this one. Sam, I totally get your point but as I read your post I'm reminded of something I would say to my children when I was trying to help them develop their own moral compas "Just because something is common doesn't make it right." Coach Mills is a coach and you seem to be holding him to a standard that would be common for a coach. I have no quarrel with that approach. Coach Mills also is a very public believer. Goodness he earned a masters in theology. I hold him to the standard of a believer...which is to always tell the truth. Do we all fall short of the glory of God? Absolutely! But just because that is common that doesn't make it right. You say we shouldn't be surprised and I don't disagree with that. When Shaq missed important free throws, Lakers fans weren't surprised but that doesn't mean they weren't disapointed or frustrated. 1 4
theeagleman5 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Well said, Otis my man!!! TheEagleman just thought Paul Mills was different... guess I was wrong....
