Don’t look now, but the ORU Soccer teams are on a roll right now.

The No. 4 seeded ladies beat No. 5 NDSU 2-1 in double overtime Friday in Denver, with the Rocky Mountains in all their purple mountain majesty in the setting sun. They will take on the No. 1 Seed Pioneers in semifinal action today.

Meanwhile, the men are sitting in first place in the standings and riding a 5-game unbeaten streak headed into weekend play at Western Illinois. A win in Macomb or in their final regular season game will give them their first regular season title in two decades. Amazing feat considering the tragic loss of captain Eugene Quaynor one month ago.

Impressive performances for both sides this year!

Actually, the semifinal matchup with Denver will be played tomorrow (Sunday), with the Championship scheduled for NEXT Saturday.  The Summit WSOC tournament has a very interesting format this year, with the #1 and #2 seeds receiving a bye to the semis, and hosting the quarter and semi finals this weekend.  Next weekend’s championship match will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.  As a result, if ORU can pull off a huge upset of the Pioneers, they will travel to either Omaha or Brookings.

The MSOC tournament follows a more traditional format, with only four teams making the tourney, which is hosted by a single site (Denver) over one weekend.

I see pros and cons to both formats, but do find it strange that the Summit League offers a different format for the men’s and women’s tournaments in the same sport in the same year.
