The Mitchell Report: Program record books in jeopardy at ORU and SDSU

Here’s what it says about ORU:

Oral Roberts is also primed to see program records broken this year.

Max Abmas, unsurprisingly, already has his name planted on the Golden Eagles’ top-10 career scoring list at ninth with 1,818 points. Replicating last year’s scoring output would bring Abmas in the vicinity of Caleb Green’s impressive 2,503 points, which remarkably sits at just third in ORU history. The Golden Eagles have a pair of 3,000-point scorers in Greg Sutton (3,070) and Richard Fuqua (3,004), both of whom racked up those point totals in the NAIA.

Abmas also has a chance at cracking the top 10 in assists, where he’s 116 assists shy of the edge of that list and has averaged 108 assists over the past two seasons. All of these individual numbers, however, could be impacted by how Abmas’ game evolves alongside an ascendent Isaac McBride and plenty of other talent either returning or transferring in.

Similarly, the key roles DeShang Weaver (92 games) and Carlos Jurgens (89 games) have played in Tulsa over their respective careers, along with Abmas (89 games), should see them all land in the program’s top 10 in career games with healthy seasons. Weaver also has a shot at becoming a 1,000-point scorer, entering the year with 740 points.

Richard Fuqua actually played 2 of his seasons in D-1.....so there's that.....the Mad Bomber was not only a tremendous outside shooter from distance like Mad Max but was under rated at taking the ball to the hole...had there been a 3 point shot back in those days Fuqua would have a much higher total.....:circle-logoi:

And, Greg Sutton also had one year at NCAA D-1, with his last two at the NAIA level. That statement he made isn't quite right.

Anthony Roberts also totaled 2341 points in his four years at ORU....average was 21.7 but that was skewed by the 5.2 average his freshman season when he came off the bench....last 3 yrs he put up averages of 22.4....24.2 and 34.0 which would be unheard of today....and that was w/o the 3 point shot....Woosie not much of a long range bomber as most of his outside shots were in the 15-18 foot range....also a wonderful inside player at only 6-5 but played taller....we should also point out that those 34 points per game his senior year was against a BIG TIME D-1 Schedule.....TheEagleman was at the game in Jan. 1977 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and Anthony just took over that game in crunch time against a very good team on the road.....:tb-white:

The article brought a key point that maybe has not been talked about much: guys like DJ, Carlos, and Kareem have a ton of experience.  They are still left over from the Sweet 16 run.  Those guys for the most part, were very up and down last year.  ORU needs them to step up this year and be solid on both ends of the floor.  Not saying they need to be all stars but just be consistent (the core group).

The reason that Woosie's average was so low his freshman year was that he, and all  other freshman at that time were not eligible to play on the varsity team.  They could only play on the JV team their freshman year.  I am not sure how he scored any points his freshman year.  One of the games that I remember well was when he scored  66 against North Carolina A&T.  He was truly in "the zone" that night - and that was without the three point line.  It was truly an amazing performance.

Freshmen were, indeed, allowed to play in 1973-74. Anthony played on the "JV" team to give hime more minutes. He averaged something like 40 points per game in JV games. Actually, Anthony was about the best player, period, on the varsity team. Incredible talent. Should have started over McDougald or Fox. He was something else.

74 Titan is correct....Woosie did play varsity ball in his freshman year as it was around that time that the NCAA rule was changed to allow freshman to participate.....and TheEagleman agrees that he probably should have gotten more minutes than he did but ORU was pretty loaded in 73-74 and went to the Elite 8 where we lost to Kansas after beating Syracuse and Louisville.....:circle-logoi:
