Is Max the GOAT???

Geez, what a roster.

Max is the only current player that would have seen significant time on that team; would have pushed JB to coming off the bench.

Imagine a lineup with Max and Ken in the backcourt, Yemi and Larry on the wings, and Caleb on the blocks - dream team! 🤩

But Yemi couldn’t score… he only played defense. /s

Imagine what Yemi would have done to Baylor Cryermann at SDSU.

Dude would have transferred out of the league after his freshman year. 🔒⬇️ D

That was the plus side of Ken and Caleb's teams: they played solid defense.  Sure, they each could each put up 20 a night but the team would lock down their opponent's and hold them to the 60's in points.  Just do not see that from Max's teams very often, not that it is all his fault, but he is not an elite defender.  Max has slowly improved on defense and hopefully he is a little better in his senior year!

As we are discussing Max as the goat, it brings up a question: is Max a great leader on the court?  Maybe some of you who see him live in person at the Mabee Center could answer this question.  Just watching the games on the ORU Sports Network, it does not seem like he is the vocal leader but maybe he leads in other ways.

What year would this have been?

Who is #14?

Who is #30?

Thanks.

This is the 2006-07 team.  #14 is Jonathan Bluitt; #30 will be in the rafters some day - Caleb Green.

2005-06 team Bluitt wasn't on that 2006-07 team neither was Owens

I think Bluitt and Owens were on both of those teams

Max is definitely a leader on the court.  He could score 30+ every night, if healthy, unless he is being double-teamed, but instead he is unselfish and distributes the ball regularly to his teammates.

Even when Max is playing SG, he has developed into a player who is always thinking like a PG.  So when another PG is on the floor, it is like having 2 PGs at the same time.  He leads through his preparation, skill, and unselfish play.  He is clearly well liked and respected by his teammates as well.

I’m a huge Max fan, but a reality check revealed to me that Max Abmas’ 24.5 points per game in 2021-22 was the second-lowest average ppg among the scoring leaders since the NCAA adopted the 3-point field goal in 1986. Only Tyler Harvey’s 23.1 ppg in 2014-15 was lower.

Among ORU’s great scorers, Max ranks 7th for most ppg in a season. Here are ORU’s top ten scoring averages for a season:

1 & 4 Richard Fuqua 1971-72 (35.9 ppg) & 1970-71 (31.8 ppg)

2 & 5 Greg Sutton 1990-91(34.3 ppg) & 1989-90 (30.6 ppg)

3 & 8 Anthony Roberts 1976-77 (34 ppg) & 1975-76 (24.2 ppg)

6 & 10 Ray Thompson 1991-92 (25.5 ppg) & 1992-93 (23.6 ppg)

7 Max Abmas 2020-21 (24.5 ppg)

9 Sam McCants 1973-74 (23.6 ppg)

I find it interesting that five of these records were completed from 1971-77, four from 1990-1993, then there was an 28-year gap before Max had his great season.

As many have pointed out, Max impacts the team in numerous positive ways besides scoring points

The Steph Curry of ORU yes.
Steph Curry-esque, no. Not as fluid or ambidextrous as Curry. Anxious to see how his game has improved this year.

Max is the Stephen Curry of ORU basketball 🏀!

Have to respectfully but strongly disagree Keenan, Max is a very good player and a great kid; he is nowhere near Stephen Curry's level or our GOAT or honestly one of or top 5 guards!! Max is a really good shooter; his overall game is limited.

When you look at the great guards we have had (and we have had some outstanding guards over the years), Max is playing by far the weakest schedule in our history and his defense, ball handling and passing are not overly impressive.

Here are the best guards in ORU's history, all drafted into the NBA and several played many years at the next level, all great athletes, great scorers and probably better overall players! is Max top 5?

Anthony Roberts- 1st round draft pick, far better overall player, arguably ORU's best player ever!

Richard Fuqua- 4th round pick, scorer that put ORU on the map, our most significant player ever! The foundation of the program.

Sam McCants- 4th round, led us to our first NCAA tournament, a player!

Greg Sutton- 2nd round, schools all-time leading scorer, NAIA competition, but put-up huge numbers and played several years in the NBA

Hayward Workman- 2nd round, great defense and passing and also played several years in the NBA.

Arnold Duggar- 3rd round, small guard out of NY that could pass and score, played with Roberts for what was probably our best back court ever!

There are great players on this list, where do you put Max?

Only been following ORU basketball off and on for twenty years.  So most of the guys that you mentioned ORU 40, I never saw and only hear from the guys on the forum how good they were.  So you make some good points.  To me, Max is the most dynamic player the Eagles have had in the last 20 years.  Caleb Green is better overall but Max has just brought such excitment to the program, with his ability to score and hit 30 foot jumpers.  Of course, Max also did like Curry in helping the Eagles on that tourney run, much like Curry did for Davidson a few years back.

Guessing Max patterns his game after Curry but of course Steph is a top 10-15 all time player.  So yeah Max will never reach that level but who will?
