Talbert Excels at Junior Outdoor Championships

06/26/2006

Indianapolis, IN ? Less than a month removed from a standout freshman campaign, Rachel Talbert captured a pair of top three finishes while competing at last weekend's Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Championships, held at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of IUPUI. Talbert finished second in the finals of the javelin competition before taking third in the finals of the discus.

Last weekend's competition served as the selection meet for the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing, China, as the top two finishers in each event qualified for the World event if they have met the qualifying standard.

Talbert, the 2006 Mid-Continent Conference Outdoor Track and Field Newcomer of the Year, used a final toss of 45.89 meters to earn the silver medal in the women's javelin competition, finishing behind only Bekah Stoltz of Kent State (50.01m). Despite her second place finish in the event, Talbert will not join the US Junior National Team in Beijing, as her final toss fell short of the World qualifying standard.

Talbert again rode a strong final heave to the top of the leader board during the women's discus finals, ending the event with a toss of 48.69m to claim third place. She missed out on second place by just 0.03m, making Talbert the United States' first alternate for the discus in the upcoming World Junior Championships. Emily Pendleton (Unattached) and Jere Summers (Cal State-Northridge) finished first and second in the discus with respective tosses of 51.97m and 48.72m.

Should either Pendleton or Summers not be able to take part in the World Junior Championships, Talbert would take their place on the national squad, as her final throw of 48.69 easily met the world qualifying standard of 47.00m.

Talbert also competed in the shut put competition at the junior outdoor championships, earning a sixth place finish with a heave of 14.26m. Kamorean Hayes (Unattached) used a toss of 15.45m to win the event.
