ORU at Denver

Recommended Posts

ORU travels to Denver to play the Pioneers Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles beat Denver at home 83 to 66 on December 30th. That game was a bit uneven in nature; ORU jumped out to a big lead at half time and Denver battled back in the second half before falling by 17 points.

The Pioneers are 8-15 on the season and 4-6 in league play. Three of their wins (St. Thomas, UND, Omaha) came at home and they have one road win against Omaha. They lost Thursday at home against UMKC, 72 to 61.

Denver Conference Stats

Three of their top five players are freshmen.

This is a significant game, in that Denver should come into it with a bit of confidence after making a run in the second half at the Mabee Center.  And, Denver is a very likely opening round opponent for ORU in Sioux Falls in March, so it will be important for ORU to establish their superiority on the Pioneers’ home court - and not give Denver some additional hope for a first round upset.

SDSU will really benefit from their presumed #1 Seed in Sioux Falls.

St. Thomas is ineligible for the tournament this season, and UND and Omaha are likely going to finish 9th and 10th.  One of those two will be staying home to round out the field of eight teams; the other will draw the Jackrabbits in the opening round 1-vs-8 game.

That means as a 2-or-3 seed, ORU would face one of the following, in current order from the bottom:  Western Illinois, Denver, or South Dakota.

That's quite a step-up in competition from SDSU's first-round draw...

You sumed it up ORU Terry: three of their top five players are freshman.  So they are very up and down, and we saw that in the game at the Mabee Center.  It will probaly be a game of runs but in the end ORU's experence will prevail.

Hopefully the Eagles will continue to mix the inside and outside combo on the offensive end.  That will really keep defenses on their heels.

TheEagleman would expect the Pioneers to be very scrappy at home.....and also ticked after getting waxed by UMKC last night....ORU has to be a bit weary travelling from Omaha to Denver and playing just 42 hours after finishing a tough game last night....plus there is the altitude issue....ORU vs. Denver will be a tough one.....a game ORU should win for sure....but we can't come to battle with our C game......expecting ORU to be about a 7-8 point favorite.......tough to lay those points on the road.....:tb-blue:

]I predict ORU will be up for the Pioneers.  Max will have another high scoring game and Big Eli will continue to dominate on the inside and show us some good dunks! Francis, Carlos, McBride, Phipps and Kareem will play well and we should win by 12. ORU 84- Denver 72.

Way to set that line there, Ace.  Got anything yet for the Chiefs and Rams in the Super Bowl? 😎

Good guys up by 1 at the half. I was really hoping that this game wouldn’t be behind a paywall since it isn’t on ESPN+.

A very good team win for ORU today.  All eight guys had their key moments but thought DJ's block and then three with about 1:40 to go in the game sealed the deal.  The Eagles had a good mix of threes and some inside help from Lufile.  ORU now 14-0 when they score over 80.

Another road win....ORU tough to beat when we shoot 48% from three. Max with 28....should be a nice flight home....Coach Mills can enjoy a nice beverage....😎🍺😉

In the post game Coach Mills said he told the team at halftime if they didn’t clean up the turnovers they weren’t going to be allowed on the plane. It’s a long walk from Denver 😛

That guy Corban Porter, a freshman with Denver, was very impressive.  Trey P. hit some big three's when Porter was on fire and cut the lead to two.  It was a really exciting game, and the Pioneers will be a tough out in the upcoming seasons with all these talented freshmen.  ORU now 6-1 on the road in conference play.

Now the Eagles finish the season with 5 out of 7 at home.

Another nice conference road win.  From the start of each half to the first under-16 timeout, ORU outscored Denver 33-22.  The remainder of the game was pretty even (with offsetting runs) at ORU 56 to Denver's 58.  Very glad to see the team come out and take control at the start of both halves.  Today, it was the difference-maker!

DJ with six straight games of two blocks.  He has good length and seems to come up with key blocks.  He now leads the Summit League in blocks.

Max with another outstanding game and should win conference player of the week for the third time this year.  On the road trip he scored 56 points and had 8 assists and only two turnovers.  Sounds like he is making a run for All-American status.

Seems like ORU is almost a better team on the road than at Mabee Center.....and all we have left is the tough trip to North Dakota featuring what will be a huge revenge game vs. the Bison.....but speaking of revenge, next up is WIU at Mabee on Thursday Night and the Leathernecks will be looking for a little payback.....GO BLUE!!!....:shield-logo:  vs.:wiu:

Was at the game and super impressed with Abmas. I think Trey Phipps was the wild card - he hit a couple of big shots. If Denver can get a few more pieces in the off-season to compliment Porter-Smith-Tainamo, they will be dangerous but not at the ORU level yet.
