Coach Bozeman makes national news!!

 

"Arkansas-Pine Bluff coach calls timeout to make team run sprints during loss to No. 19 Iowa State

Solomon Bozeman wasn’t going to wait until they got back home — or even until after the game.

The Arkansas-Pine Bluff head coach was so upset on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum that he actually made his players run sprints in the middle of the game.

While it didn’t work — the Golden Lions fell to No. 19 Iowa State 83-64 in Ames for their eighth loss in nine games on the season — Bozeman’s move was certainly an unusual one for college basketball, to say the least.

Bozeman called the sprints timeout just minutes into the second half, after they fell down into a 20 point hole. The Golden Lions went nearly five minutes without scoring shortly after that break, which propelled Iowa State to its largest lead of the night before taking the 19-point win.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff did put up 42 points in the second half, only three less than the Cyclones did, so perhaps the sprints made an impact after all.

Bozeman is in his first season at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, replacing longtime coach Greg Ivory. The program has had just one winning season in its 25-year history, back in 2010 when it made the NCAA tournament as a No. 16 seed.

Based on its rough start to the year, and with battles against No. 4 Baylor and No. 7 Texas ahead later this month, it’s going to be a big uphill battle for Bozeman to pull that feat off this season."

 

There are several stories about this online- as I've posted before I've personally had coaches make the team run sprints right after a flight or first thing in the morning... but during the game is a new one even for this old timer!!

Brutal. And probably somewhat embarrassing for the players. The tweeted video said it was because they didn't get back on defense? 

Their schedule is absolutely brutal. Have only played one home game so far and have been playing some really good teams. Would love to see Solo turn that program around. I miss his intensity on the bench.

My high school coach had us do this once after we lost a scrimmage; but not for the reasons you might think:  while shaking hands after the game, the opposing coach tried poorly to be sympathetic of our shortcomings by saying to our coach “Well, you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken s**t.”

Our coach was determined to prove to his counterpart that we were NOT poultry excrement, so he had us all line up and do a couple of suicides* to show how tough we were.

Funny thing was, we had no clue about their exchange; we just figured we were being punished because, truth be told, we DID play like chicken bleep that day!

*A “suicide” (in our parlance) was running from the baseline to the free throw line and back, half court and back, opposite free throw line and back, then opposite baseline and back.  Was that the same for everyone?  Regardless, it’s a stupid name:  “suicide” is self-inflicted mortality, and I sure don’t recall running those things ever being OUR idea. Maybe they should be called “manslaughters”.

That was a suicide for us as well.
