ORU Women's Golf Wins Payne Stewart Memorial Tournament

Congratulations to the ORU women's golf team, champions today of the 54-hole Payne Stewart Memorial, hosted by Missouri State in Springfield, MO.

The ladies held off a field of 15 other mid-to-low-major schools on Tuesday, after taking a first-round lead and holding it through Monday's 36-hole play.

This is pretty significant news for the ORU golf program; would have to dig in the record book to find the last time either the men or women's teams took home a team tournament trophy.

The medalist runner-up for ORU is a "graduate student" transfer from LSU.  Really nice addition to the program - even if only for one year.

And, after round two of the 17-team Coeur d' Alene Invitational in Idaho (hosted by Gonzaga), ORU moved up from yesterday's second place finish to hold the lead.  With six teams within six strokes of the lead, it's going to be a wild ride tomorrow on the course with the famous floating green.

ORU finishes in fourth place in the CDA tourney, shooting a nine-over 293 in all three rounds for a tournament total of +27.  Hawaii wins with a score of +20, shooting even par as a team today.

The women's team had their best round of the season today, finishing 8 UNDER par for the day at the tourney hosted by Mizzou.  Trailing the host Tigers by 20 strokes at the beginning of the round, the Eagles picked up 18 strokes on the leaders over the course of the day, earning second place honors in the 14-team field only two shots behind the champions.  This team has put together a very solid fall season, and should have a legitimate chance to earn the right to be the Summit League representative for the NCAA regionals in the spring.  Denver has owned the conference in recent years, but ORU has definitely closed the gap over the past year.
