Why the Double-header Saturday/Sunday Mid-Con format?

I am wondering why the mid-con prefers the double-header on Saturday and Sunday format.

I understand that they want kids to travel on Sunday night so they can be back in class on Monday, but it leaves no lee-way to play make-up games for a rain-out, and causes teams to have to play some 7-inning games.

Why not play a Friday PM game, a Saturday double-header with 2 nine inning games, and a Sunday game with a noon start. This would give teams the flexibility to play a 2nd game on Sunday if 1 of the previous games was rained out.

Teams could travel on Friday AM, and only have 2 overnight stays (Friday and Saturday), so I assume it would not increase travel costs. I assume that teams still travel on Friday and arrive on Friday night in preparation for a Saturday game (maybe not for the Western Ill-Valpo trip?)...

And while we're at it, why do they play 7 inning games sometimes??
