Not looking good for the Golden Eagles. With apologies to Captain Quint...we’re gonna need a bigger bat.

This is the 21st straight year (of Summit membership) that ORU has advanced to the Summit Tourney Championship game.  But, whereas the Eagles' record for the first 19 years was 19-0, the most recent two years have been 0-2.  There is no doubt that two things have happened over the past 4-6 years - the Summit opposition has improved and the ORU program has digressed.  Today was a classic example of this shift.  Although I give the team a lot of credit for clawing their way out of the loser's bracket to force the "if necessary" game... the lack of depth in ORU's pitching staff was very telling.  In prior years, ORU's #5 starter and secondary bullpen staff have been much higher quality than the Summit opposition's #4 starter and bullpen.  Not so this year...

ORU pitchers gave up 8 walks and 1 HBP compared to 3 free passes by the Bizon.  Those six additional baserunners (along with the two reaching base by error) were the primary difference in the game, as NDSU only outhit ORU 13-12.

To record the 27 outs, the NDSU staff threw 138 pitches, 93 for strikes (67.4%)

Conversely, ORU threw 185 pitches (47 more!!!), 105 for strikes (56.8%)

It's very difficult to offset the inability to find the strike zone, and tonight, ORU couldn't overcome it.

With Northern Colorado and Saint Thomas joining Summit baseball next season, it will be interesting to see how competitive the conference is in 2022.  At least the conference tourney will be at JLJ next May - that is one good reason for optimism!

The better team won, pure and simple.

The fact that a mediocre program such as NDSU (or ANY Summit League team, other than facilities-rich Omaha) is the proverbial “better team” is mind-boggling, considering ORU’s resources, geography, history, etc.

Curious to see what, if any, changes are made in the off-season to shake things up.  Could be an interesting challenge for the new AD...

Congrats to NDSU....like OT said, the better team won.

It will be interesting to see if changes are made. Would Mike Carter clear the deck before leaving and let the new AD make the hire?

It feels like the program declined after Walton left and further declined following Snedecker's departure.

One thing is for sure, the trajectory of the program has been downward for at least the last several years.  As OT said, given our resources, geography, history and whatever, we are not getting the best possible return on our investment.  It seems that we are settling for mediocre at best.  Coach Folmar did not inherit a team/program that was in the toilet and had to be rebuilt, he took over a team/program that had a very impressive and rich history.  Sadly, we have gotten worse rather then better.  It is time for a change.

BTW, congrats to NDSU and good luck in the "Big Dance".  Make the Summit League proud Bizon!

Men's Soccer 8-4-1 with a late season collapse and other issues

Men's Tennis 2-13

Women's Basketball 6-15

Women's Soccer 2-12-1

Women's Tennis 4-12

Women's Volleyball  3-15

Not much in Men's & Women's Golf

Not much other than a couple of individuals in Track/Cross Country

I mean...other than Max and Kevin, there hasn't been much to get excited about. And, it's been like this for some time, in most sports.

Unfortunately, Voice is not wrong.
I don’t mind a down year here or there, but there needs to be turnover in almost EVERY program at this point.

Completely agree with both Voice and EagleManiac.  Do not get me wrong, I am thrilled with what our MBB team did with the run in the Big Dance, but basically every other sports program we have at ORU has failed over and over again.  This is not a case of an occasional down year, for some of our programs they have been in the tank for years.  And yet, from all outward appearances we accept the mediocrity and reward it by allowing those programs to continue without showing any type of improvement whatsoever.  Hopefully the new AD will not permit this to continue.

The new AD will make some changes. His goal is to build a resume and move on within 3-5 years.

I say, as long as ORU athletics is markedly improved in 3-5 years...godspeed
