@ Colorado State - lost  68-72

Idaho - won  85-57

@Omaha - lost  78-81

SDSU's stats through 16 games:

ppg:  75.5

FG%:  45.6%

2pt%:  54.9%

3pt%:  31.1%  (they have shot 366 3-pt shots out of a total of 942 - 39%)

rebound margin:  +4.2

turnovers per game:  13.9

assists per game:  13.5

Against Omaha they essentially played only 6 players - the 7th player logged only 2 minutes. Their point guard (Key) is injured; not sure of his status on Thursday.

Here is their lineup:

Arians (6'4" So):    7.9 ppg and 5.5 rebs with 1.3 assists and 1.4 turnovers; shoots 42.5% FG% - 29.4% from 3pt. 51 of his 106 (48%) shots are from behind the arc

Wingett (6'7" So - transfer from Memphis):  8.0 ppg and 3.7 rebs with 0.8 assists and 0.7 turnovers; shoots 36.7% FG% - 37.3% from 3pt. 75 of his 120 (63%!) of his shots are from behind the arc.

Freidel (6'4" Fr):  8.6 ppg and 3.5 rebs with 1.1 assists and 1.3 turnovers; shoots 41.4% FG% - 36.4% from 3pt. 77 of his 11 (69%!) of his shots are from behind the arc. This kid is good

Wilson (6'7" Fr):  16.5 ppg and 6.8 rebs with 1.4 assists and 2.8 turnovers; shoots 61.3% FG%. Has not made a three point shot this year.

Dentlinger (6'8"  So):  9.7 ppg and 6.1 rebs with 1.6 assists and 1.2 turnovers; shoots 54.6% FG% and has only taken three 3-pointers all season - making one of them

Key  (5'10" So):  9.2 ppg and 2.9 rebs with 4.7 assists and 3.0 turnovers; shoots 40.8% FG% - 36.4% from 3pt.  41 of 103 (40%) of his shots are from behind the arc.

Unlike past years, it appears that they have two players who do not shoot 3-pointers. That means our post players can possibly sag off them a bit - or at least not guard them so closely if they go out on the perimeter. The Jacks have long guards (6'4", 6'4" and 6'7") - not including Key. Their length could cause some trouble for us and they might be able to shoot over top of us. If they are short handed, it might make sense for us to play uptempo to wear them down a bit.

Key injured a knee vs. Idaho last week; a blogger for Omaha basketball says he is "out for a few weeks".

The two times I have watched them this year, SDSU played at a frantic pace, sometimes looked very undisciplined.  Granted, these were road games; they may look totally different at home.  But, they are very young; playing mostly sophomores and freshmen, so that may explain it.

Curious to see if ORU's experience, particularly Burns and Kearns out top, plays a major role.

SDSU did mainly play these 5 guys (Arians, Wingett, Freidel, Wilson and Detlinger) against Omaha.  The only other players that played was a true Fr Baylor Schreierman (22 min) and redshirt Fr Mins (2 min).  TJ left the cupboard a little bare.  IF Jenkins Jr would have stayed and Calib Grill would have came, it might have been different story.

SDSU had 13 of their 78 points scored against Omaha scored by seniors and juniors.  Their seniors are Key (injured for about 2 weeks) and Brown (walk-on).  Their juniors are the 2 juco's that they brought in this year.  Buchanan (injured) did not play either so that leaves Wilson.  Wilson scored all 13 points.  The rest of their roster consists of 4 sophomores and 5 freshmen.  Buchanan played in 21 games as a true freshman at North Dakota.  He played around 12 minutes/game there.

On the other hand, Omaha had 37 of their 81 points scored by seniors and 28 of their 81 points scored by juniors.  Omaha only has 2 seniors and 2 juniors (like SDSU) but they scored 65 of their 81 points.

The positive is that SDSU lost by 1 point at Omaha last year (on a last second shot by Hahn) and this year SDSU was only down by 1 point with the ball 7+ seconds left.  SDSU gave the ball to Wilson but Pile blocked the shot and that was that.  Omaha might be down some this year, too, but SDSU didn't seem to have lost much ground on them.  We will see how they stack up compared to the rest of the conference soon.

Thanks for the perspective 91jack. SDSU does appear to be a bit young - with lots of freshmen and sophomores. They will have ups and downs (hopefully downs on Thursday) as the season progresses. It is not unusual to see freshmen hit a wall in the last part of their first season.

Most teams shoot the ball a lot better at home - and I'm sure this is true for the Jackrabbits. Gotta guard the perimeter and take good shots on our end... and limit turnovers & make free throws. Hope we can continue to grab offensive rebounds for second chance points.

Defense wins on the road. Keep them in the 60s and win but over 70 and ORU is in trouble. It would also be good to see KO and Eman both play like Summit League first team all stars, as they were voted in the preseason.

Just my opinion, but I believe that ORU must get a split in these first two games on the road to start conference play.

year 3 for Mills, things need to start happening!

Vegas opened this morning with the Jackrabbits +1.5 points; it's moved to +2.0 at one book, with a total of 147.

Could be a watershed game for ORU in terms of the program's status; the last time the Golden Eagles won at SDSU was 2011 (0-6 in Brookings since then, plus an additional loss to the Jackrabbits in Sioux Falls).

Tough one to pick, but if I had to put money on it, I would have to go with SDSU (or any other Dakota school) until ORU proves it can win in the Great White North.

The Jackrabbits shoot the ball well at home. They are undefeated on the home court and we are 1-6 away from the Mabee Center.

We need everyone to play within themselves and not force things. Buckle down on defense, guard the perimeter and grab rebounds. If the shots aren’t falling - stop taking them.

Abmas and Burns will be key.

The injury to the Jacks PG (Key) could be integral to the outcome of the game.  If there ever was a time to break the streak in Brookings, this is it.

However, SDSU is 9-1 in games in which they shoot more FTs than their opponents and 0-6 when they shoot less, so the Zebras will also play a huge role in the game. Since SDSU is undefeated at home, this also means that they have shot more FT than their opponents in ALL of their home games.  Perfect recipe for home cooking! 😩

With ORU's first incursion of the season into the Badlands this week, it seems only fitting to resurrect this thread from last January, the 1st page of which includes details of over a decade of ORU s***w jobs from blonde-haired referees in the Great White North:

https://forum.orusports.com/index.php?/topic/10943-oru-at-ipfw/

Here's hoping this sort of thing becomes ancient history now that the Dakota schools seem to have (how shall I put this) "expanded their recruiting pool"...lol.

It's hard to find all the games Yorkovich has officiated this season, but I did find a couple of box scores from USD and SDSU home games that he's already called this year, while once again not doing ANY ORU home games in the non-conference schedule.

It just seems wrong that there are referees from up in that area who annually call several Summit League games in the Dakotas after seeing those same teams during the non-conference part of the schedule, then only call conference games in this region that feature those same teams.

On the other side of the coin, veteran refs such as Kelly Self or Frank Spencer, well-respected officials who have both called ORU home games this year, never call any ORU games up in the Dakotas, presumably because they can get higher-paying (and easier-accessed) gigs from other leagues.

Scary note:  one game he called a few weeks ago (Wayne State vs. an NAIA school) included his son, Brad Yorkovich, as a referee... 😬
