San Francisco takes two from the Eagles

By Staff Reports

3/26/2006

San Francisco University swept a doubleheader from Oral Roberts on Saturday, winning the opener 5-3 and taking the nightcap 2-1 at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

The losses even ORU's record at 10-10 on the season, and the Golden Eagles match a school record with their sixth consecutive defeat. San Francisco improves to 15-12 with the pair of victories.

The Dons took an early lead in game one.

An RBI single by Luke Sommer in the top of the second and a bases-loaded walk by Joey Railey two batters later gave USF a 2-0 advantage.

ORU starter Nick Jones held the Dons in check until the top of the fifth. Jones, who retired the previous six batters in order, allowed the first three batters of the inning to reach base. An RBI single by Stefan Gartrell, a run-scoring groundout by Jonathan Norfolk and an RBI double by Mitchell Bialosky gave USF a 5-0 lead.

ORU broke through in the bottom of the fifth when Jake Kahaulelio doubled in Tim Torres to make it 5-1. Carter McQuigg brought the Golden Eagles closer when his two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth cut USF's lead to 5-3.

The Golden Eagles brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn't score. With Brendan Duffy on first and one

out in the ninth, Kahaulelio lined out to right field and Duffy was doubled up to end the game.

Scott Cousins (1-0) tossed seven solid innings for the Dons, allowing three runs on eight hits.

John Quine picked up his second save with two shutout innings.

Jones (3-3) took the loss for ORU, allowing all five runs on nine hits in his five innings.

Game two was a pitcher's duel, but ended on a sour note for ORU.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Kahaulelio's double scored Duffy from second. USF tied the game on an RBI single by Gantrell in the top of the fourth.

Making the first start of his career, Chris Ashman allowed one run on six hits over 7 2/3 innings.

He struck out five and walked two. Chance Chapman (0-1) took the loss, allowing one unearned run in 1 1/3 innings.

Aaron Poreda (2-3) went the distance for USF, tossing 131 pitches.

He allowed one run on five hits, striking out nine with two walks. The Golden Eagles and Dons wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
