Update on Bryce Thompson:  I talked to a friend of his family that's also pretty well-connected in basketball circles around town, who says there may be an announcement of some sort in the next few days, and that it may be down to TU, OU and OSU, in that order.

Apparently, Team Bryce was contacted by everyone who's everyone in college basketball when he first entered the portal.  Those schools were subsequently presented with a wish list similar to what Bryce either asked for or was assured of when he went to Kansas out of high school:  a starting role, lots of playing time, being the focus of the offense, etc.  All of this with the idea of showcasing him for one year before he makes himself eligible for the draft.

A lot of the big boys (and apparently, one little fish in south Tulsa) simply said they could not make those kinds of guarantees; so the list got whittled down pretty quickly.  Then, OSU finds out their starting backcourt of Anderson and Likekele are both returning next year, and OU's Porter Moser dipped into the transfer portal for a guard from Duke to join a pretty good backcourt already, and suddenly the dance card is looking a little thin.

Which leaves good ol' Tulsa standing there on the dance floor, hoping they're the one that gets picked.

If they get passed-over again by Thompson for the second time in two years, it will be devastating.  They're one of the few decent programs in the region that's willing to comply with the wish list, so the loss of yet another local talent, the son of one of their all-time greats, would be a terribly bitter pill to swallow.

Soo.... A guy that barely played at KU last year and was pretty much told to find a place that would be more suitable for himself has a list of wishes that includes starting, play a bunch and a ton of shots for 1 year so he can leave... Yea, i bet that went over really well. No wonder that list of teams shrunk dramatically.:)

Tulsa may end up having to be his spot if he wants all of that!:)

I never saw him in high school and just a couple of times at KU and just looked like he is more of a role player at that level. Maybe i am missing something and he is much better than he looked there. Maybe just needs an opportunity. Wish him the best.

Thompson sounds very mediocre.....a perfect fit for TU....🤢

Looks like my source nailed it...while Mike Boynton at OSU may have inadvertently tipped his own hand... 👀

Bryce Thompson is a good player who will help any team he joins. If he lands at OSU, which appears likely, they will be loaded in the backcourt. Boynton appears to be a good coach. Given the talent already on the roster, Thompson’s minutes might not be as much as he thinks. We will see.

He's far from mediocre; he's just over-rated.

Simply not a one-and-done kind of player, but he IS a supreme athlete with a superior basketball IQ and a really high ceiling.  Think "Daquan Jeffries 2.0".

Hard not to question his toughness at this stage, though:  seems to really enjoy the recruiting process; remains to be seen if he's willing to do what it takes in the proverbial dark, empty gym to realize all that potential.

Hope he does well there! They really need some good news on the recruiting front this year. They have come in 2nd on like 4 different recruits. I believe their new assistant Rencher who was at Creighton will help them with this going forward.

I think you've hit it right on the head Old Titan, he's a good player with a lot of potential that needs to decide where he wants to play and then put his head down and get to work.

At a certain point a player has to go from potential to production!

Well the good thing about him picking OSU today is the Tulsa board is in a meltdown already!:) They have already said he is dirty and his dad is dirty and so on... Way to turn on one of your former players.

I saw that!  Never ceases to amaze me at how jaded and bitter their "fans" are.

One of them had a laundry list of local players that TU had missed on since 1980, when Nolan Richardson rolled into town*.  It's a veritable "Who's Who" of local high school stars over the past 40 years, but in TU's defense, every player listed opted for a Power 5 school and/or a Hall of Fame coach instead:

  • Waymon Tisdale (Tulsa Washington/Oklahoma)
  • Steve Hale (Jenks/North Carolina)
  • Anthony Bowie (Tulsa East Central/Oklahoma)
  • Richard Dumas (Tulsa Washington/Oklahoma State)
  • John Starks (Tulsa Central/Rogers State/Oklahoma State)
  • Lee Mayberry (Tulsa Rogers/Arkansas)
  • Ryan Humphrey (Tulsa Washington/Oklahoma)
  • Clint McDaniel (Tulsa Washington/Arkansas)
  • Etan Thomas (Tulsa Washington/Syracuse)
  • Kevin Pritchard (Tulsa Edison/Kansas)
  • Keleena Azubuike (Victory Christian/Kentucky)
  • Rotnei Clark (Verdigris/Arkansas)
  • Shake Milton (Owasso/SMU)
  • Bryce Thompson (Tulsa Washington/Oklahoma State)

* TU did manage to land a few local stars over that span, albeit more than 20 years ago:  Shea Seals (Tulsa McLain), Marcus Peel (Tulsa Washington), Creason Hay (Tulsa Washington)

Plus, a couple of glaring omissions to their list, who they will fight you over whether they were recruited/offered/wanted/etc. in the first place:  Tim Gill (Victory Christian) and Caleb Green (Tulsa Memorial).

2021 SG Jalen Ricks will announce his college choice today at noon. I think ORU is a long shot but it is cool he has us listed amongst the bluebloods.

Yeah Arkansas has been after Ricks for quite some time and he is orginally from there.  So one would think that he will be a Razorback.

Agreed, I'm guessing there wouldn't be a lot of hoopla if he picked ORU.
