Adam Oviedo -- Transfer from TCU

ORUalum

Recommended Posts

Looks like a solid pickup.

Played in 53 of TCU's 62 games in 2019 , batting .281 in 182 ABs.

Big12 All-Freshman Team in 2018.

11 errors in 175 chances, mostly at shortstop - compare that to ORU's Anthony Martinez with 5 errors in 219 chances.  Adam will need to clean up the defense, but still a great catch.

Looks like an impressive get. A good add this offseason to hopefully improve the roster going into next year.

Glad he is apparently headed to ORU.  Also, wondering why he is leaving TCU?

Oviedo came to TCU as a true freshman out of Alvarado High School in Grandview, TX. A top 150 prospect in the country and a top 15 player in the state, Oviedo chose to forgo the MLB after being drafted in the 35th round by the Minnesota Twins in favor of matriculating to Fort Worth. He played in 55 games as a true freshman, starting each at the short stop position, and was good enough to be named to the all-freshman team and as an honorable mention all-conference player. After batting just .228 in his first year on campus, Oviedo raised his average all the way to .298 in year two, and flashed more of the power that was expected of him, connecting for his first three career home runs. He struck out less as a sophomore - just 41 times in 182 at bats, but committed 11 errors after ten his first season.

A talented player, he will have two years of eligibility after sitting out next year. According to his twitter profile, he will be joining Oral Roberts University’s baseball program, a FCS program in Tulsa, OK. (??????) Of note, his former double-play partner, second baseman Coby Boulware, transferred prior to this past season, as well - to Arkansas.

….

While transfers are always concerning, both of these seem to make sense. Oviedo was likely going to get bumped by a healthy Hunter Wolfe at shortstop, and the Frogs have heralded high schooler Rhett Maynard coming in to back him up. Keefer would not have been an outfield starter going forward, and there wasn’t any where else for him to play - with just one year left, it makes perfect sense for him to move on. The other factor in all this, of course, is tuition - as a non-revenue sport with just 11.7 scholarships to spread amongst 30 guys, it’s likely both were paying a pretty penny to potentially sit the bench.

Ah, NOW I understand:  I keep seeing these tweets about an "Adam Oviedo of Oral Roberts" just tearing it up in summer ball, and I'm thinking "why didn't this kid ever play for ORU last season?", and now I know why!  LOL

For a frame of reference, the Cape Cod league is the elite summer league for college baseball players.  The vast majority of cape cod players will be drafted.  For Oveido to be performing this well against a high level of pitching talent is a great sign.  Looking forward to next season!

Sounds like a really nice get. Wonder how we landed a guy like that after this season.

Because this past season was simply a bump in  the road for a sold, proven program.
