ORU at SDSU

Obviously a huge series in Brookings this weekend as 3rd place ORU takes on 2nd place SDSU.....the Good Guys could really use 2 out of 3 vs. the Jacks to get a firm grip on clinching a playoff spot in the Summit Tournament....we also need some help from Omaha at WIU....not expecting any at all from PFW vs. North Dakota State...fail to win the series at SDSU and ORU could be sitting in 5th place come Sunday night.....it's time to man up for ORU this afternoon since game one of this series will surely set the tone.....GO BLUE!!! 😬:tb-white:😬

Totally agree Eagleman, it is put up or shut up time.  We should have never been in this position but we put ourselves here.  Going one step further, if we blow this opportunity and do not make the playoffs, Mike Carter, Dr. Wilson or whomever needs to take a long look at the program and make some serious changes.  Go Golden Eagles!

Geez....thats a bad way to start the weekend with a 5-4 loss....not much heart or talent on this 2019 team...😳

I may be missing something, but I believe our "magic number" to make the tourney is 3 (combination of ORU wins and NDSU losses).  If NDSU wins out, we have another path to the tourney by eliminating Western, but it is much more tenuous, as Western has the tiebreaker on us and finish up the season with a series against PFW.

The sad fact is, we probably don't deserve to make it.  We are 6-0 against PFW and 8-11 against the other four Summit teams, with five games remaining - all on the road against the top two teams. This is not ORU baseball.

The game was postponed about an hour after the rain hit. It will be completed Sunday at noon, followed by the third games of the series.

The loss of a game eliminates the possibility of a tie for 4th....Lets see how the other two games play out today but ORU got a gift Friday when PFW stunned NDSU for their first league win of the season...Omaha also has split with WIU so far this weekend which means  ORU maintains a 2 game lead in 3rd place at the moment....😁

I do not envy TrueBlue82 trying to do the “magic number” math now!

That’s pretty funny, as I immediately started the calculations and implications as soon as I heard of the rainout.

Unfortunately, the cancellation of this game did nothing positive for ORU.  We missed a chance to pick up a win (reducing the magic number), and eliminating the possibility of a loss did very little for us.

We now have no chance to catch Omaha (if we had won on Sunday and swept the Mavs, we would’ve tied them - and had the season tiebreaker).  So, we now KNOW that the 2020 Summit tourney will not be hosted by ORU.

In addition, a win against SDSU would also have tied us in the season series with the Jacks. Without the game, SDSU has the tiebreaker advantage on us.

The magic number with NDSU remains at two.  Hopefully, we can take care of business before the final game of the season to take the pressure off.

The ONLY benefit that I can see from the rainout is that we now have a magic number of two against WIU (it was three, because Western has the tiebreaker on us, but the reduction of a loss takes away the chance of a tie).   However, it’s probably a moot point since Western ends the season at PFW, and it is unlikely that the Necks will lose a game, so the magic number of two doesn’t do anything for us, except maybe give us a better chance to earn the three seed instead of the four, but we’d have to win two of three at Omaha to do it.

Both WIU and NDSU won today but The playoff spot and 3 seed is in ORUs  control if we win 2 of 3 at Omaha....the Mavs lost 2 of 3 at WIU and have been sub-.500 the past month and a half so its doable...if we can win just one game then both NDSU and WIU will need to sweep to eliminate the Good Guys....we need to to get that first game on THURSDAY in OMAHA or it will be a nerve wracking weekend...😬

FYI -  The Summit series for this closing weekend are all Thurs/Fri/Sat games, in order to have teams rested for the tournament the following weekend at JLJ.
