ORU Hosts First-Place Omaha

Recommended Posts

Old Titan

As stated earlier, virtually a must-win situation this weekend if ORU still entertains any hopes of capturing the regular season title, much less qualify for the 4-team championship they are hosting.

The situation is compounded by the possibility of losing a game Saturday to the weather, though hopefully there's the option of playing two games on Friday or Sunday.

After watching almost all of the past few games via video streaming, one thing sticks out as a glaring issue:  the defense.  I can't recall an ORU team struggling this much in the field at this point of the season.  There's been the occasional highlight-reel catch, but hardly a game goes by without a few routine plays ending poorly, and with disastrous results.

Which must weigh heavily on the young pitching staff, fearing they have to strike everyone out to keep them from getting on base and/or scoring.  Which may explain the other issue:  too many gopher balls for back-breaking home runs, such as the grand slam in the Arkansas game that erased the early 3-0 lead, or the two late dingers after ORU had pulled within 11-8.

The combination of shaky pitching and leaky fielding is completely out of character for an ORU team under Walton or Folmar; not sure if it's fixable at this point of the year.

But for the sake of the rest of the season, let's hope it is, and in time for this Omaha series.

Nothing like letting your starting pitcher (McMinn) blow up in back-to-back innings before you finally decide to make a change.  We are well on our way to the first loss of the day.  This is tough to watch.

Yep and by the way how about passing me a slice of that humble pie.  Way to go Good Guys.  Let's keep it up and get the sweep!

Miscues extend an inning and cost ORU the nightcap.   This quote from Coach Folmar is pretty reflective of the season to date... “We had a couple of double plays and a nice play in the outfield, but again it came down to getting in a game and just beating ourselves." – Head Coach Ryan Folmar

Good guys take the rubber game, 10-7.

Blake Hall can hit.

I didn't see the coaching staffs shake hands at home plate after this series finale, which is traditional. Bad blood on the Mavs part?

Number of quality arms has been a huge advantage ORU has had over the years, but it's just not there this year.  I don't know if this is a fluke year or if the recruiting has fallen off since Snedeker left for Lamar.

Would this be the first year ever ORU has failed to win a team championship in any sport while a member of the MidCon/Summit?

Still a long way to go in this season and ORU is five games behind first place Omaha and not likely to catch up....but today's victory to win the series is a good momentum builder for this young ORU squad.....the boys easily could have folded after falling behind early 4-0 but they didn't and found a way to win...5 hits/2HRs/6 RBU for Blake Hall was huge along with the two scoreless innings by Hunter Swift to get the win.....mid week game at JLJ vs. OU on Tuesday then another huge Summit series up in Fargo next weekend.....gotta win it because on two games separate 2nd place from 5th in the Summit....losing the series at NDSU could drop ORU into 5th place and out of playoff position...😬.....GO BLUE!!!....:shield-logo:
