It's not a stretch to have ORU at No. 2; but there are likely to be a handful of contenders for that slot, trailing consensus preseason favorite NDSU.

I think I'll wait till the big boys like Athlon and Lindy's come out with their predictions in a month or so, before anointing ORU as a conference juggernaut based on some phantom ranking from an online blog site...

NDSU is by far the favorite.

They return every player from last season’s NCAA team and will be starting up practice in a few days on their Puerto Rico trip.

Yep!

The question is whether ORU is closer to NDSU, or the rest of the pack.

I'm guessing it will be a dogfight for second place between 4 or 5 teams, with ORU in that mix as at least a spoiler, but that there's not much of a battle for first.

It all depends on guard play.  The last few seasons ORU has struggled mightly in these areas: turnovers, low assist numbers, and defense.  These stats suggest subpar guard play.  Sam Kearns is usually solid but who else will step up this year in the backcourt?  My guess is that the guy from Little Rock, Burns, and Jones from Los Angeles are two guards that can help out right away.  As far as the freshman go, you never know with freshman.  Any chance maybe they redshirt them since ORU has a lot of guards returning?

Based on hype, it stands to reason that Abmas is the only freshman who might see playing time this year.

It would be total serendipity if the Milton kid from Arkansas is good enough now to warrant any minutes.  More likely a redshirt candidate.

We are about 3 months until the 2019-20 season gets underway.....after a careful in depth analysis.....TheEagleman will set the early pre-season over/under for ORU wins at 14.5......I will re-evaluate that number in 90 days......😎

Top 144 rankings are out and some of ORU's opponents are on the list. UT Arlington is 119, NDSU is 107, Tulsa 105, and Missouri State is ranked 100. NDSU has 10 of their top 11 players. They had one guy transfer so yes they are big favorites in the Summit League.

#119 - UT Arlington

#107 - North Dakota State

#105 - University of Tulsa

#100 - Missouri State

Geez, TU is picked EIGHTH in the American conference; that would mean a sub-.500 record in league play.

Frank Haith is 99-66 in five years at TU, and as recently as 2018 was being paid $1.6 million a season, more than twice any other men's basketball coach at TU history, including national championship coaches Nolan Richardson, Bill Self, and Tubby Smith.  He reportedly received a 2-year contract extension for a lesser amount in March, pushing him out to 2022 (rumored to be between $1-to-$1.3 million).

Really surprised he's not on more of a hot seat than it appears; the modest extension does little to suggest he's truly safe unless TU can return to significant postseason play following a three-year hiatus.

And yet, when the two teams have met recently, TU seems miles ahead of the current ORU roster.  On paper, it should be a more competitive game this year; but of course that's not where games are played, is it?

So the schedule released by ORU last month and shown on the ORU Athletics website for the men is incorrect?....TheEagleman is wondering how that can happen.....will we be able to replace that game at this late date????…...🙄

Slightly embarrassing, to say the least.  Likely a case of ORU not wanting to make the change to their schedule until whatever is replacing it is finalized and announced. Unfortunately, that approach doesn’t work very well anymore in the lightning speed era of social media.

Silver lining to this is that UTA’s tweet called it a “series”, which hopefully means a home game with the Mavericks in a season to come.

Best case scenario - ORU was a late invite to an exempt tournament, adding a few games at a neutral site to an already light schedule, requiring the UTA series to be postponed.

Glass half full scenario - ORU added another home game to the schedule, forcing the reschedule of UTA.

Worst case scenario - more kerosene has been added to a dumpster fire OOC schedule.

Too bad ORU won't be playing in TX this season... since that seems to the primary recruiting area that sure doesn't help. At least is APPEARS to be a series.

According to the ORU website they took the Arlington game off of the schedule and have a gap between Dec. 3-14 with no games scheduled. They will have plenty of time to study for finals. So only 28 games on the schedule this year.

...and the "addition by subtraction" march toward avoiding another 20-loss season continues:  you can't lose D1 road games that you don't play!

I kid.

But, this is really bizarre, any way you slice it.  Miscommunication and/or misreading of the contract dates?  Did UTA pull a fast-one at the last minute, leaving ORU out to dry for this season's game?  Did ORU request the change in order to get into a tournament this year and rise to a reasonable number of games?

I guess there is something to be said about waiting until "every 'i' is dotted..." etc. before announcing the schedule.  Maybe August 1st annually would make more sense in this day and age.

I heard something today re: the UTA game:  the Mavs double-booked the 12/7 date for a home game with UC Santa Barbara, either inadvertently, or "vertently", or whatever (lol).

UTA reportedly paid their way out of the snafu with ORU, so not a complete loss, I suppose.  Maybe that money could be applied toward buying a home game?  (Doubtful it was that much.)

Remains to be seen whether another game of some sort will/can be added at this stage during that 11-day gap in the heart of the non-conference schedule.

Coach Mills can just call up his old buddy Coach Drew and get a game with Baylor for that open slot.  That way ORU still has a game in the heart of Texas for recruiting purposes.

Would any D1 school still have an open date this close to November?
