theeagleman5 Posted January 23, 2019 Share Posted January 23, 2019 Great pick up, OT....TheEagleman remembers the Titans being upset by NIU in 1973....listening on the radio in 5 Yellow during my freshman year with several STREET Wing Mates....I think a bunch of us went out to Shotgun Sams Pizza after that game to eat/drown our sorrows or maybe it was Der Weinerschnitzel??..... theeagleman5 Posted January 24, 2019 Share Posted January 24, 2019 That late season loss in 1973 helped to cost ORU an at Large NCAA berth.....at that time there were only 26 teams in the tournament and there was a limit of one automatic berth per conference....that 72-73 ORU team led by Richard Fuqua, Eddie Woods, David Vaughn, Greg McDougald and Al Boswell was really good but cocky....we finished something like 21-6 but really shouldn't have lost more than a couple games.....ended up going to the NIT where we drew Top 10 UNC who had lost to NC State in the ACC tournament and had to go to the NIT.....back then the NIT was a much more prestigious tournament because of the one bid per conference rule.....the entire tournament was played in NY at MSG and the ORU-UNC match up was worthy of an NCAA tournament game.....we got smoked almost from the outset....most of the student body including TheEagleman watched in the cafeteria on several TVs set up around the front.....UNC led by George Karl whipped ORU 82-65 or something like that....a very disappointing end to a season that started out with ORU ranked 4th in the nation by Sports Illustrated.....Oral came out during a chapel waving that issue of SI and a big smile on his face......those were some good times for ORU roundball....the following year we went to the Elite 8.....we shall never see that again......
