ORU and The NET

The NET, explained: NCAA adopts new college basketball ranking to replace RPI:    https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2018-11-26/net-explained-ncaa-adopts-new-college-basketball-ranking

The NCAA Evaluation Tool, which will be known as the NET, relies on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses.

I am wary of the NET... If the NET is an open formula like the the RPI (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25) then it could be a great improvement. If it's a black box then who knows...

ORU checks in at No. 305 of 353 teams in D-1, in eighth-place among Summit League teams (SDSU is tops in the conference at No. 159).

Sadly, that sounds about right, with Western Illinois right behind at No. 216.  Battle looming between those two for the eighth and final seed in Sioux Falls?

Can't say I'm too impressed with the formula at this point in the season:  Stephen F. Austin, at 4-1 and pretty plucky, is laughably No. 303, due to just one blowout loss vs. powerful Miami (FL).  Meanwhile, Abilene Christian is at No. 55 (!) with a 6-0 record vs. nothing but low-majors and non-D1 teams.

FYI, Cal Baptist checks in at a relatively respectable No. 244 despite a 2-4 record.  Guess that road win at ORU helped them to some degree.

And, for those who worry that this formula was designed to penalize mid-majors while propping up the big boys, consider that the lowest-ranked team among Power 5 conferences is Wake Forest of the ACC at No. 205, meaning every team in the bottom 150 schools of this matrix is a mid- or low-major.

So, be afraid - be very afraid.

The NET's goal may very well be to make it harder for mid and low majors but INITIALLY the top 50 doesn't look too bad for those schools...

10. Loyola Marymount
12. Belmont
13. Nevada
22. Radford
25. San Fransisco
26. Georgia Southern
30. Buffalo
40. Duquesne
41. Murray State
48. Furman
50. Lipscomb

There is obviously a weight towards blowout losses so teams like ORU that have to buy games on the road against the P5 will not rank well in the NET.

So far I have only seen media members complaining that mid majors are ranked too highly 🙄 or that certain blue bloods aren't ranked high enough. Am I missing something or does the NET not factor in the ranking of the opponent like the RPI did? Is that what is causing the aberrations of LMU and Belmont compared to RPI and KenPom?
