From autumn 2018, Francis Gustavs Lācis (200cm / 22.02.1999 / Rīdzene / VEF School) will represent the NCAA First Oral Roberts University, whose basketball team Golden Eagles compete at the Summit conference.

Trainer Raimond Feldmanis has played in the second division of the Latvian Basketball League this season in the VEF School. Bear 29 played an average of 9.1 points in 24:27 minutes, won 6.8 rebounds (the best score in the team), made 1.3 assists and blocked 1.4 goals.

The attacker realized 46% points and 30.2% three-point shots, as well as 55.6% free-throw. The team represented by the bear in the eighth final of the LBL2 lost to Riga Stradins University basketball players. Player scores - an average of 3.59 points in 19:49 minutes and 5.5 balls won.

The bear represented Latvia's U16 and U18 teams, winning 247 points in a total of 44 games (averaging 5.6 points). The personal record is reached in 2017. On August 1 in Bratislava - 18 points in the Junior Championship victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The Oral Roberts basketball team Golden Eagles is based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and plays at the 10,775-seat Mabee Center. The team has competed five times in the NCAA Championship (1974, 1984, 2006, 2007, 2008), reaching the Elite Eight debut.

The team became the Summit League champions for three consecutive years (2006, 2007, 2008). Oral Roberts played in the league between 1997 and 2012, then returning to 2014. This season, Golden Eagles with the balance of 5-9 finished in sixth place, but in the quarter-final of the conference championship lost # 3 "Denver" with 88:90.

The Summit League currently has eight teams from Oklahoma, Colorado, Denver, Purdue University of Fort Wayne, Nebraska, Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota State, Western Illinois University and Southern Dakota South Dakota State University). North Daekta North Dakota will join the league in the summer.

Bear will become the fifth Latvian player in Oklahoma. In the 2012 season, Ilze Teilāne represented NJCAA's first division team, Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College, while from 2014 to 2016 she played at NAIA University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

In the autumn of 2011 Ieva Eida joined the Oral Roberts women's team, while in 2012 she moved to Cameron University's second division. In the same year, Andis Malahovsky and Andris Mister joined the NCAA Second Division, Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Latvia's most famous spokeswoman, Summit League, is Zane Teilāne, a graduate of Western Illinois. She was twice recognized as the best player in the league (2005, 2006) and became the first one to be selected in the WNBA draft (then from the Mid-Continent Conference).

Frank Lac wanted to see Cincinnati, Ole Miss and Maine in their ranks.

I like it! 6'7 Euro style player. Hopefully, he can shoot, as I think that will be our biggest need next year.

That translation reminds me of a News Radio episode where Jimmy James had his autobiography translated to Chinese and then back to English :)

Nice length and good shooting in that video.  Certainly a "defense optional" league so its hard to tell exactly what level of skill he has.  His lateral speed would be my question cuz it will say which positions he could play.  A great pickup for sure!

Speed is definitely a question but in the Summit League Lācis and Weaver could be match-up problems on the wings with their size.

Red-shirt candidate??

He could probably use a year to put on some muscle and get used to the physicality of the American game.

He’s 19 years old - so a bit older than a normal freshman. It would be nice to red-shirt players so they can mature - but we need bodies on the court.

Right now I'm happy to get bodies for practice.  This looks like some good raw material.  Weaver was defensive MVP in his district in Houston.  They will probably go head to head a lot and learn some things from each other.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • 4 years later...

Good for Francis, another solid guy, much like Carlos was.  Maybe ORU can recruit some more European players?  We shall see.

Hasn’t Sam Patterson been the connection with the Euros? If so, then hopefully we can keep up the connection with him remaining on staff.
