ORUParentLurker Posted January 19, 2018 Share Posted January 19, 2018 My alma mater was firing a football coach 10 years ago and it ended up being a mobile call to him while he was visiting a recruit. They got killed for that in the press. The alternative was to do basically what ORU appears to have done.. i.e. start the process, meet the players, etc and then let Sutton know officially as soon as he decides to answer the call. There isn't a good solution if the person you are firing doesn't want to be fired and knows it's coming... and has the balls to try and avoid it. That all being said. I think media backlash is usually more of an indicator of the respect (or lack thereof) for the AD and the program. It sounds like the local media took the "how dare they fire this good guy and they don't deserve better" stance. Media wants programs to "know their place". ORU wants to be better and it takes bold moves to get there. The firing could have been handled better but it's only a lingering issue if the new guy fails. I think the point you're missing is that this genie hasn't been in the bottle for a long time.
