ORU vs Omaha (12-30)

Recommended Posts

ORUTerry

ORU hosts Omaha on Saturday (12-30). The Mavs are 4-11 after playing a pretty tough non-conference schedule that included: Oklahoma, Louisville, TCU, Washington, Kansas, Drake (2x) and Arkansas State. They are undefeated at home.

We begin the Summit season with three consecutive home games, all against teams without a "Dakota" in their name.  As the three Dakotas are also the top Summit title contenders, these three games will likely play a HUGE role in our ultimate seeding (and tiebreaker scenarios) for the March tourney.  We SHOULD win all three, which would give this team a big boost of confidence heading into the remainder of the conference season.  Losing one would not be the end of the world, but dropping two would set the table for another finish at the bottom of the heap.  It will be very interesting to see if Ruder is back - and whether Albert picks up his game against weaker opposition.

Not sure we can beat Fort Wayne on 1/4 but an opening win vs. Omaha is a must...ORU needs to whip these guys....:eagles:

Omaha shoots 37.0% from the 3-point line and has a (2.7) rebound margin. Zach Jackson (6'5" Jr. guard) is their stat leader: 17.5 ppg with 6.7 rpg. He shoots 44.0% (22/50) from three-point and 53.9% overall. They have three players listed at 6'8 or 6'9". Evidently they lost a player (Mitch Hahn) after six games who was averaging 12.2 ppg and 7.3 rpg.

The team averages 15.2 turnovers per game and shoots 67.8% from the free throw line. Opponents are shooting 36.2% from the 3-point line and 48.3% overall.

You may be under estimating Ft Wayne.  They were picked 2nd by preseason pubs and have done nothing so far to hurt that.  I personally think they are the best team in the Summit right now.  A win against them would be big for us.

An "exciting" Summit League opener matching two 4-11 teams.....Omaha lost their first 7 games but have won 3 of their last 4...so like ORU, they have been on the upswing the past couple weeks for the most part except for a crushing loss at Kansas.....similar to ORU's pounding at Arkansas.....both teams have been off for the Christmas holidays and should be well rested and minor injuries healed....hopefully, ORU gets Ruder back which would help our lack of perimeter shooting....this is a big game for both squads and ORU really needs to get a W here or we are surely going to be the favorite for the Summit basement......should be a very empty Mabee Center for a game played with the students on break and New Years' Eve just hours away.....a very tough one to call especially because we never know what kind of effort ORU is going to display....if we play as we did vs. Missouri State and FGCU then hard to believe we shouldn't whip the Mavs....but if the team that lost to So. Nazarene shows up then ORU is doomed....honestly, TheEagleman has no clue and some of you are out there saying....what else is new?....so just because we are playing on the home court and the guys are probably happy to be home let's call this one a win and ORU goes 1-0 in the Summit with an 83-74 victory over Omaha....if Javan and E-Man pick up where they left off then ORU could win this one even more easily....GO BLUE!!!....:eagles:

ORU still a 5.5 point favorite this afternoon with an O/U of 152.5....TheEagleman likes the Good Guys with this line so teasing ORU with the Over seems like a reasonable play.....let's see if we can finish off the year with a win....if the home team can't beat lowly Omaha at home tonight then 2018 is going to be an ugly year at 7777 So. Lewis.....but I think Coach Mills has been working hard with these guys and should have them fine tuned after 9 days off from the early season grind that was frankly just an absurd road schedule....still think this team can compete in the Summit and be at least a middle of the pack team if we continue to get strong play from Javan, E-Man and RJ....Kearns and Ruder should also be back near 100%.....so let's GO BLUE and ring out the old year with a bang tonight....maybe even wear those really nice gray uniforms that we liked last season.....:eagles::tb-blue::eagles:

Whatever color the uni is, it will be nice to see the new ORU font, I would think since they’ve started wearing the road ones the homes gotta be ready to go!

still holding out hope for a Titans retro uni sometime soon....

Washington State transfer Renard Suggs, a UNO legacy, ready to make own mark with Mavs

Renard Suggs had big expectations for his one and only season in Omaha.

The Washington State transfer, the son of former UNO standout Rickey Suggs, envisioned becoming an opening-game starter for the Mavericks and, eventually, the Summit League’s newcomer of the year.

Instead, he’s been sidelined by a knee injury and has played only eight minutes of basketball this season.

Suggs, who had floating cartilage removed through surgery to relieve pain that had been nagging him since summer, made his UNO debut at Baxter Arena on Dec. 21 against Montana State.

could be a difference maker for Omaha........full article

Ruder not playing. Heard he was ready, but has pink eye.

Rough minutes for Albert --- ORU immediately goes on a big run once he sits.

Not bad first half.  Nice to see the Golden Eag;les in this position at the half.  Keep it up guys!  And yes, RJ is looking very impressive.

Where are the new jersies?  This has to be the worst rollout of a rebrand I’ve ever seen. Why introduce a new logo if you’re totally unprepared to actually use it?

In other news, we’re playing really well. I almost forgot what it was like to dismantle a mediocre Summit League team.  Feels good.

Great first half at home.  What an improvement over the SNU home game a few weeks ago.  It helped that we warmed up from 3 point range.  Rider will be a nice addition once he is healthy.

On a side note, I never expected to hear the entire song played loudly “You Give Love a Bad Name” at halftime of an ORU home game. I can imagine that is not quite what Oral envisioned.  But if we win tonight, we might have to keep doing it until we lose at home.  Whatever it takes...

Hard pass on Bon Jovi and NJ in general.

Suggs not much of a difference maker for Omaha tonight....he has 14 but ORU is pounding the visitors.....E-Man and RJ are really doing a great job.....and Harris too.....love it!...:eagles:

Solid solid win.  Eagles did just what they were supposed to do - take early control of a game at home against a weaker opponent, and never let them back in.  And with a starting lineup of a freshman and four sophomores...good days ahead!

Impressive performances from several different guys but the best thing I saw was players TALKING on the floor all game.

ORU and TheEagleman both finish the year with a huge win.....this was impressive for a team that just 3 short weeks ago got rolled by an NAIA team at home...getting a 93-74 victory tonight vs. Omaha is a really nice start to the conference season and wonderful performances by RJ and Eman with 17 and 21 respectively....a double double for Nzekwesi (21 and 11) and Javan just a bucket short of a the same with 8 and 12.....seven players with 8 points or more is great balanced scoring....Coach Mills has really done a fine job turning this group around in the past few weeks starting with the benching of Albert.......that took guts.....let's see if we can build on this win with a big game vs. IPFW coming up next Thursday....GO BLUE!!...:eagles:
