theeagleman5
Good points.....guess Kampe and Oakland can do a lot better than us.....and maybe he was friendly with Scott Sutton...who knows?....ORU is now a really low mid major until we can right the ship.... Old Titan
Remember the flaming I endured after posting back in October how this roster struggled with running the 1-3-1 defense in the Rogers State scrimmage? And, how SDSU with a rookie coach ran into the same issues in the non-conference schedule last year, before returning to man-to-man principles in the second half of the season, taking them to an NCAA berth? I understand trying to instill your system, and culture, and all that; but I also heard Coach Mills say in an interview that he believes in tailoring his offense and defense to the particular talent on hand, "just like Scott Drew does at Baylor". The real question may be whether this roster can run ANY defense and hold opponents under 80 points a game - or more...
theeagleman5
No we can't....and TheEagleman will be shocked if Kansas State doesn't put up at least 85-90 tonight.....the over is a lock unless ORU scores in the 40s....
ORUTerry
We just don’t play good defense - and haven’t been able to for a couple of years. You can tell that Mills is frustrated and is obviously trying to find the answer. The ultimate answer is to recruit players that can play defense.
ManiacAlum
Kampe is never boring, that's for sure. I guess can't blame him for being nostalgic for Sutton when ORU allowed the worst NCAA tournament team ever to come to Tulsa and win, basically by dictating the pace of the game. Nearly let them do it again 2 years later with a less talented team. I can appreciate Mills wanting to implementing the 1-3-1 now. It's significantly less effective in the half court when you can't extend pressure into their backcourt or trap though. Like, at all. But I think it's the lesser evil than the dunk fest that would take place if we tried.
ORUalum
DoMo was live tweeting the game.... Oakland vs Oral Roberts!!! Classic rivalry 1-3-1 Where’s the student section? Big Al should get 20 and 10 a night. He has that ability

Yes its true that talent can cover up some mistakes, its still execution and cohesiveness that makes the defense. Everyone is obsessed with size but the numbers show that our guards have been okay defensively both in man coverage and they wacky zone Mills employs. This issue has been our bigs. White, Owens and Miller are the three lowest rated defenders on the team. Eman is the most physically gifted player on the squad and probably makes the most defensive mistakes. Who are you going to recruit more talented than him? No one thats who. The good news is there has been noticeable improvement. Mills is letting the guys play and they will continue to learn. Getting RJ back will help quite a bit because you simply cannot pressure as a guard if you playing 36 minutes. Kearns and Ruder played 43 each against Oakland, had 2 combined TOs, 35 pts and fed Albert all night without a hitch. One bad decision at the end may have cost the game but it was overall a very solid effort. The coaches have who they have at this point and the season isn't over. I knew Ruder and Kearns played good but didn't realize they had played that well.
ORUTerry
Maybe it is just the players adjusting to each other and being out of synch. Most of our squad has not played together previously and are getting used to each other and a new zone defense. The post players do look lost at times. I just know that we aren’t playing good defense right now - and haven’t for a couple of years. Whether it is players, schemes or some combination - it needs to change. ORUTerry
Agree that Kearns & Ruder played a nice game against Oakland - handling their length pretty well (until the end).... and feeding the post all night long. Harris needs to work on his shot so that opponents can’t play 5 on 4.
ManiacAlum
Oakland was missing their leading scorer and their starting backcourt still combined for 49 pts and 9 treys. That's terrible.
