Does anyone know the significance of "he has turned in his financial aid papers"?

Does that mean he's coming at the semester to enroll?

They change the rules on this stuff all the time, but I seem to recall "from back in the day" that this is the procedure for "signing" a kid outside of the specified period for Letters of Intent (LOI's).  The 2017 Early Signing Period for LOI's ended Wednesday, 11/15, so it begs to question whether he got in under the wire for an LOI or not.

The main difference is that LOI's bind the kid to a school and require a release if he changes his mind and wants to go somewhere else; "turning in financial aid papers" does not bind the prospect.  He could still go somewhere else before fall semester starts, up until he actually attends class.

With him being at a prep school, it does make you wonder if he's coming on board for the second semester.  Maybe this is how you do it, if that's the case?  I think they call it "grey shirting" (as opposed to red shirting).  He could practice with the team all second semester, get started on his classwork, and be classified as a freshman in the fall of 2018.

I think...

That would be ideal.  It probably just depends on if he was fully qualified when he came out of HS.  I assume his year at Mt Zion was as a post grad.  This happens a lot with international kids where they come over when they can during the school year and are able to practice right away.  Then they start the clock the following season.

Kevin O'Banor (Mount Zion) showed why Oral Roberts wanted him on its roster. The senior was 10-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He made plays on both sides of the ball and was able score in different ways. He led all scorers in the game against Cardinal Gibbons.

Very impressive skillset.  Having some longer guys who can play inside and out was the key to Baylor's offense the last few years.  They liked to run dual PGs who could both run the pick and roll action.  If you have bigs who can either roll or pop out to shoot threes that offense becomes pretty deadly.

Looks like this is what is happening. Obanor will spend time this semester practicing with the team and getting used to our system. That should allow him to be somewhat acclimated next year when he can help on the court. Nice to have another 6'8" player in the mix - especially since we will be losing Albert Owens to (re)graduation.

It can have a HUGE impact on a kid - gets started early on the strength & conditioning regimen, learns the offense & defense & the INTENSITY of college ball vs. prep, gets to really know his teammates and coaches away from the recruiting BS, gets a head start on his classwork this semester and summer session - a myriad of benefits from starting this way (as hundreds of football players across the country have experienced the past few years).

One possible caveat to this approach:  pretty sure he is NOT eligible to redshirt beyond this year.  Starting in the fall, the clock starts on four years of athletic eligibility over a four-year span of the calendar.
