Commissioner's Cup -- Summit Conference

This "update" from the Summit League offices about the standings of the Commissioner's Cup says a lot about the state of ORU athletics ... Men are 9th last/place.  Women are 6th place. Overall we're 7th.  We'll pick up some points for Baseball.   We use to win this one pretty regularly.   Overall, we're not the significant force in the conference that we were before 2010.

Winter Commissioner's Cup Release

ELMHURST, Ill. - South Dakota moved into first place in The Summit League Commissioner's Cup standings following the winter season of the 2016-17 academic year with 57.5 points. The Coyotes are also first in the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Award Standings, while South Dakota State is atop in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports Award Standings.

North Dakota State sits in second place with 52.5 points followed closely by South Dakota State's 50 points. In fourth place is IUPUI with 42.5 points and Denver comes in fifth with 40.5 total points. Omaha (32.5 points), Oral Roberts (29.5 points), Western Illinois (29 points) and Fort Wayne (24 points) round out the standings.

South Dakota ranks No. 1 in the Commissioner's Cup standings after securing three first-place finishes (women's cross country, volleyball, men's basketball) this season. The Coyotes also took second in women's indoor track & field and third in women's swimming & diving and men's indoor track & field).

The Bison are in second after capturing league titles in women's soccer, men's indoor track & field and women's indoor track & field. NDSU also placed second in women's cross country and men's basketball.

The Jackrabbits are atop the men's award standings and sit in third place overall after claiming the men's cross country title and taking second in men's indoor track & field and women's basketball.

The Commissioner's Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men's sports and women's sports. The men's award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women's award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU's athletic program from 1994-2001.

Standings for the 2016-17 Commissioner's Cup and the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports and Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Awards can be found below. The breakdown of each institution's points and finishes within each sport can be found by clicking on the link above.

From the 97-98 season until we left for the Southland we won 9 times, and were a close second most of the years we missed. We've fallen a long ways.

Major changes need to be made.

No excuse for finishing dead last in Men's sports.

So the question is does anyone with influence care more about the program (mission/vision/athletes) than they do about their relationship to those in power? I hope so...

Hate to say it but the numbers above indicate one thing....its Time to take a serious look at Mike Carter....we need a younger aggressive AD who gets the culture.....how about an ORU grad?...Isn't it time after 50 years????...gotta be somebody out there??   :geek::eagles::geek:

My question is... have other school's budgets increased while ours has shrunk slightly?  Does Mike Carter have to hold on to the coaches he has because he doesn't have the $ to bring in anyone better?  While ORU is definitely financially sound as a university and is operating in the black every year, we are not at the place of being able to increase financial support for the athletics programs.  Mike Carter has been very loyal to his coaches over the years and part of that may be due to financial constraints.

Our MBB coach is at about $500K per year which I believe places him at the 2nd highest paid HC in the Summit.  We are currently spending about $14MM for a new track.  What are you talking about??

Yeah I don't think most Summit League teams are close to half of what we spend on Men's basketball salaries.

I am not just talking about men's basketball.  I am talking about all the coaches in all the sports that count for the commissioner's cup.  There has been very little turnover of coaches at ORU unless they were moving to another job on their own (like Jerry Finkbeiner, Rob Walton or Kyle Cussen).

I honestly don't recall a coach being relieved of their duties by Mike Carter.   Also, many of the new hires to replace those other coaches also came from assistant coaches like Ryan Folmar and Misty Cussen.  So, I was asking if it is possible that the main reason Mike Carter holds on to his existing coaches is because he doesn't feel like he has the $ he needs to hire a better coach (who would still fit the mold of abiding by the ORU honor code, etc.) to replace the existing coaches.

I thought the $500K that Scott makes annually seemed like a lot of $, but supposedly Brad Underwood was making $400K at Stephen F Austin, around $1M annually at OSU, and now is making $3M per year at Illinois.  Since NDSU, SDSU, and a few other teams in the Summit have fairly well supported football teams and basketball teams, not to mention a lot of oil money in the Dakotas, are we at a disadvantage for athletic support $ for all our programs now vs the Dakota schools?

Also the $ for the track did not come from the regular athletic budget, and it is not costing anywhere near $14M.  The $ for the new track and tennis facilities came from special fundraising by Mike Carter, something he has also pulled off for the new Soccer field and before that the indoor baseball facility.

NDSU's Coach Bohl was making $275,000 after winning multiple FCS championships  before he left for Wyoming.

North Dakota is having budget problems with the downturn in crude oil over the last 2-1/2 years. Not sure how much higher (if any) their athletic budgets are from ours. They certainly have more alumni.

Well....it's a pretty sad state of affairs for ORU sports based on the numbers above....TheEagleman isn't saying that Mike Carter should be fired....from all accounts, he is a fine man of integrity with a ton of experience...I am not sure who is to blame for this downturn over the past decade but the buck usually stops with the man in charge. If the ORU administration doesn't care about the product on the field/court and wins/losses then I guess nothing is going to change....we alums care the most so we are most affected...it's clear from the lack of butts in the seats at Mabee Center that the Tulsa community surely doesn't care about ORU basketball or any other sports for that matter....I know times and the culture has changed over the past quarter century but OR never would have stood for the poor performance  that we have seen from our teams over the past several years....he understood that much of the perception of ORU was based on wins by our teams.....obviously, how the student body conducts itself, academic achievement and how the campus looks are other major issues which ORU has addressed over the past decade and ORU again is in the black financially and looking great...we got rid of the controversial leaders and hypocrite board members that we also had making bad decisions....but the one thing that has clearly gone down the tubes is our teams and let's face it....that is where a lot of the headlines can get generated....we really need to find a way and find someone who can turn this thing around....There has to be an ORU grad....a man or woman who gets the culture and can take over and start to make the changes needed to turn this around....it doesn't sound like dollars are at the root of the issue.....TheEagleman is not smart enough or rich enough to know the answers....but other than baseball, things haven't been very encouraging.....and it hurts this old alum to watch it.....at least we are talking about it....I hope that the leaders in the ORU Administration are as well......:|:|:oru-logo::|
