Chi Chi Gonzalez call up?

Cheech has his first bad start tonight; surrendered four runs at home to the Angels in 1.2 innings before getting pulled.

He's starting to do what a lot of rookies do, once teams start to figure them out and they get knocked around a little:  he was afraid to challenge the hitters.  Tonight he was aiming the ball low and away almost every pitch.  When he missed outside, he filled the count, and when he got the occasional one in the zone, low and over the middle, they roped him.

Gotta have the confidence to bust 'em inside and/or high in the zone on occasion, even if you're a sinker baller.  Otherwise, professional hitters just sit and wait on that low one down the middle late in the count.

He'll learn - or he'll be back in triple A...

So still not wanting to include Cheech in a deal for Cole Hamels???.... :wasntme:

Yeah, whatever - trade away your future to win 80 games this year instead of 75.

If history is any indication (and in cases such as this, it typically is), Gonzalez would be better off in the long run with another organization.

It ain't as if "Texas Rangers" and "pitching success" are synonymous...

It would take a lot more than Cheech to pry Hamels away from the Phillies.....Cole is going somewhere soon but TheEagleman doubts that it will be to Texas....more likely the Red Sox or the Dodgers.....or maybe the NY Yankees???... :nerd:

he was 1 pitch from getting out of it only down 1 run.....full-count, bases loaded with Trout on deck and he left one up and ended his day.

Steve Busby made a good point on the broadcast that Chi Chi currently lacks a 2 strike put away pitch.  he will probably have to develop some type of knee buckling off speed pitch because he does not have the fastball to blow guys away.

these seem to be normal growing pains for a young pitcher as the league gets a book on him.

Good point, Alum....most young hurlers lack that 3rd pitch and Cheech probably would have benefited from another full season at the AAA level to work on stuff like that...but injuries for Texas forced his call up.....in the big leagues those hitters will catch up to you fast especially the 2nd time around.....still, Gonzalez has looked very poised for a rookie....the best is yet to come for the Ex-ORU kid.... :nerd:

  • 3 weeks later...

Rumors have Texas as the leading contender for Cole Hamels after his no hitter last Saturday vs. Cubs.....not sure if Gonzalez is part of this deal but it's possible that Chi Chi could be on his way to wearing Phillies pinstripes by the end of the week..... :nerd:

Shouldn't the Rangers be in sell mode? They are in an odd position with lots of farm talent but also bloated contracts and aging vets. Theyre not "right on the verge" as they were in 2010. Gotta rebuild at some point and preferrably while they still have players with trade value. Bringing in Hamels would just delay that and then the Rangers would really have to blow it up and start over.

Chi Chi aside, there are just too many question marks for the Rangers to pay that much and give up top prospects for Hamels. Their bullpen is awful and they started the season with no lefty relievers.

Rangers are a third place team and fading. Even if they pick up Hamels for a run next year, if they dont win a WS its just not worth it. Then theres no way they can sell off Hamels and equal value for the prospects they lost.

Also, its a pretty strong pitching market, Rangers can get a SP at a relative discount compared to Hamels.

If I were a Ranger fan...I'd have to agree with you, Maniac....not sure why Texas wants Hamels....I guess they think that they can make a run in 2016 and beyond because Hamels has 3 years left on his deal at very reasonable prices for a staff ace..... :nerd:

-- signing Elvis to a big deal.  he got paid, got lazy, and his game regressed

-- Daniels refused to deal Jurickson Profar when he was the #1 prospect in baseball.  now the guy can't stay healthy and has not seen a big league field in the last 2 years.

-- Choo's contract

-- Fielder's contract

-- Holland can't stay healthy

-- Tommy John for Yu Darvish

all this totals up to the curse of Nolan Ryan.   Jon Daniels just had to have more power and a bigger title, so he went to the owners and forced out Ryan.  I'm sure Ryan is sitting on his ranch with a smile on his face thinking "I told you so"

So Hamels DOES go to Texas but Gonzalez is not involved in the trade....we got a mediocre major league pitcher (Harrison) and the Rangers' top catching prospect and 4 other guys.....looks like a great deal for Texas since they didn't give up Chi Chi and Gallo.....plus you got our middle inning reliever Flame thrower Jake Diekman who has a lot of potential....I would have to say that the Rangers got the better of this deal....Hamels is your ace for the next 3-4  seasons since he's signed and only 31 years old with no arm injury history.... :nerd:

from Evan Grant at the DMN

The Rangers will also send Philadelphia a package of prospects headlined by outfielder Nick Williams, right-hander Jake Thompson and catcher Jorge Alfaro. Right-handers Alec Asher and Jerad Eickhoff of the Round Rock rotation will also go to Philadelphia.

Williams, 21, had emerged as a big-time left-handed hitting outfield prospect at Double-A Round Rock. The Rangers, however, more highly value Nomar Mazara’s power from the left side and were able to keep him out of the deal.

Similarly, the Rangers fought to keep right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez, which led to the inclusion of Rockwall’s Thompson.

Alfaro entered the season as perhaps the organization’s No. 2 prospect behind Joey Gallo, but an ankle injury and surgery wrecked his season. He is still considered a project behind the plate, though his raw skills are mind-boggling.

It is a significant price to pay.

time will tell who came out ahead, the Phillies did get three of the Rangers top 10 prospects.  however, the Rangers managed to keep  Gallo, Mazara, and Chi-Chi.  one side effect of the deal is that in moving Alfaro, Jose Trevino may be able to advance quicker through the farm system.

Yes....TheEagleman has been reading some info on the prospects...seems Phils' got the #3, 4 and 5 rated prospects in the Rangers' system....the catcher/Alfaro. pitcher/Thompson and OF/Williams all seem to have upside....Alfaro will be our top catching prospect right off....right now our main catcher is Cameron Rupp out of U. of Texas....he's a good catcher but his bat is weak for a guy who is 245 pounds......also Harrison the starting pitcher will move right into Hamels' spot in the rotation...he's been hurt the past couple years but at 29 maybe he can regain his all star form....taking him was to help offset Hamels's salary...he's worth a shot....the deal is getting lukewarm reviews here in Philly.....the fans liked Hamels....but it was probably the best they could do.....and it was best since we will be rebuilding for the next 3-4 years at least.... :|

I must admit, that was a really good deal for the Rangers. They didnt have to give up Gallo, Mazara and kept young pitching in Gonzalez while getting the Phillies to offset some of the cost for Hamels by taking on Harrison and throwing in cash. Sounds good to me.

Like Alum mentioned, the Rangers are still on the hook with some bad contracts but I guess you go all in with what you have on the roster and see what happens in 2016-2017. Cant deal them anyway.

And Philly gets 3 top prospects. Maybe those guys will turn out to be contributors, or they can deal those guys for more players/prospects.

I was rooting for the Dodgers to try and pull off the ridiculous and put Kershaw, Greinke and Hamels in the same rotation. Probably would still find a way to lose to St. Louis in the playoffs somehow.

Forget the Dodgers, how about those Bucco's? Everyone now: "Here we go Pirates, here we go!" Get ready to raise the Jolly Roger.
